Al Mahrah Governorate
Al Mahrah ( ar, ٱلْمَهْرَة '), or simply Mahra, is a governorate (''muhafazah'') of Yemen in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Situated in the area of the former Mahra Sultanate, its capital is Al Ghaydah, and it has international borders with Saudi Arabia and Oman. Languages and people A sizeable part of the Mahrah population does not speak Arabic as their primary language. Non-Arabic-speakers primarily speak Mehri or Mahri, which is a Modern South Arabian language, similar to the adjacent Dhofar Governorate of Oman. The people that speak Mahri call themselves 'Mahris', and are presumed to be descendants of the ancient people of 'Ad. Mahra Sultanate
The Mahra Sultanate, known in its later years as the Mahra State of Qishn and Socotra ( ar, الدولة المهرية للبر وسقطرى ') or sometimes the Mahra Sultanate of Ghayda and Socotra ( ar, سلطنة المهرة في الغيضة وسقطرى ') was a sultanate that included the historical region of Mahra and the Guardafui Channel island of Socotra in what is now eastern Yemen. It was ruled by the Banu Afrar dynasty for most of its history. In 1886, the Sultanate became a British protectorate and later joined the Aden Protectorate. The Sultanate was abolished in 1967 upon the founding of the People's Republic of South Yemen and is now part of the Republic of Yemen. Mehri People
The Mehri (var. al-Mahrah, al-Meheri, al-Mahri or al-Mahra ( ar, المهرة), also known as the al-Mahrah tribe ( ar, قبيلة المهرة), are a Semitic ethnic group primarily inhabiting South Arabia and the Guardafui Channel island of Socotra. Origin They are descended from Mahra bin Heydan bin 'Amr bin el-Hafi Quda'a bin Malik bin 'Amr bin Murra bin Zeyd bin Malik bin Ḥimyar. Mehri Language
Mehri or Mahri ( مهريّت ) is the most spoken of the Modern South Arabian languages (MSALs), a subgroup of the Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic family. It is spoken by the Mehri tribes, who inhabit isolated areas of the eastern part of Yemen, western Oman, particularly the Al Mahrah Governorate, with a small number in Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni and Omani borders. Up to the 19th century, speakers lived as far north as the central part of Oman. Mehri and its sister MSALs were spoken in the southern Arabian Peninsula before the spread of Arabic along with Islam in the 7th century CE. Today it is also spoken by Mehri residents in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as in Kuwait by guest workers originally from South Arabia, as well as nationals with a South Arabian heritage. Mahendra Singh Mahra (born Siltham, Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand) is an Indian politician and agriculturist who served as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand (April 2012 to April 2018), served as Minister Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing & Watershed Management, Government of Uttarakhand (2002 to 2007) and served as a four time MLA. Ummed Singh Mahra
Captain Ummed Singh Mahra (21 January 1942–6 July 1971) was a posthumous recipient of the Ashoka Chakra. Early life Captain Ummed was born in a Kumaoni Rajput family in Almora, born in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. In 1967 he graduated from the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 19 battalion of Rajputana Rifles Rajputana Rifles on 11 June. He was promoted lieutenant on 11 June 1969. Action In July 1971, as an acting captain, he led a raiding party against the headquarters of an insurgent group in Nagaland. Though wounded in a firefight, he continued to lead the operation which captured a large cache of arms, ammunition and important documents. He died of his wounds after returning from the raid.
