Madras College FP RFC
Madras College Former Pupils Rugby Football Club is a rugby union side based in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. They play in Caledonia Regional League Division 2. They play at Station Park, St Andrews and field two men's fifteens each weekend, as well as a women's team (AKA The Saints). The club has close ties with Madras College, a secondary school in St Andrews. Although not all players are former pupils of the school, many are and sixth year pupils often train and play with the club during holidays and weeks in which school rugby is not on. The good facilities of the rugby club and St Andrews in general attract many bigger teams such as the Scottish national side and Heriot's Rugby Club to train there during pre-season. The University of St Andrews Rugby Football Club is an affiliated member of the University of St Andrews Athletic Union in Fife, Scotland. The club runs four men's and two women's teams, which play in the university leagues. History It was founded in 1858, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the world. In 2008, the club celebrated its sesquicentennial year, marking its 150th anniversary. The club is one of the founder members of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) and is often quoted as being the birthplace of 'running and passing' rugby, a distinct tactical advancement from the initial 'solo break/kick and chase' tactics which characterised the early years of the game's development. Alex Samuel (born 27 December 2002) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays for Glasgow Warriors at the Lock position. Rugby Union career Amateur career Samuel went to St Leonards School in St. Andrews, and then went on to Madras College. He then played for Madras College FP. Professional career He moved to Glasgow Warriors in 2020, initially with the Scottish Rugby Academy, before graduating from the academy with a permanent deal with the Glasgow club. Then Warriors' Head Coach Danny Wilson marked out Samuel as one to watch in a supporters event in 2020. While at the academy he was aligned to Stirling Wolves in the Super 6. Glasgow Warriors are a professional rugby union side from Scotland. The team plays in the United Rugby Championship league and in the European Professional Club Rugby tournaments. In the 2014–15 season they won the Pro12 title and became the first Scottish team to win a major trophy in rugby union's professional era. North And Midlands
North and Midlands - and now known as Caledonia - is a select provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players mainly from north of Scotland, roughly corresponding from around Stirling northwards. Historically the North and Midlands team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. When the professional Caledonia Reds provincial side folded in 1998, the North and Midlands amateur district was resurrected and renamed Caledonia. The team played as Caledonia in three seasons of an amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship from 1999 to 2002. The amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship was revived for 2022-23 season, and the Caledonia district now plays there. The Caledonia region also still plays at age-grade. Jamie Ritchie (born 16 August 1996) is a Scotland international rugby union player who plays for Edinburgh Rugby in the United Rugby Championship. Rob Dewey
Rob Dewey (born 19 October 1983) is a Scottish former rugby union player and played for the Glasgow Warriors. Despite having only come onto the professional rugby scene in the 2005–06 season, a lethal combination of pace and power gave him a name amongst the Scottish rugby community. Club career Dewey first made his name in the amateur game in Scotland. He was the Scottish Premiership Division One joint top try scorer for the 2004–05 season while playing for Heriot's with 16 tries, and made four appearances (including two starts) for Edinburgh Rugby. This form earned him a professional contract with Edinburgh who signed him ahead of the 2005–06 season. He scored eight tries in just 11 games in his first year of regular professional rugby union. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves.
