Macroom GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club based in the town and surrounding parish of Macroom in County Cork, Cork, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club is affiliated with Cork GAA county board and the Muskerry GAA divisional board. The club has been one of the most successful Gaelic football clubs in County Cork, Cork having won the Cork Senior Football Championship ten times and having contributed numerous players to Cork GAA football teams. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Cork Under-21 Football Championship
The Cork Under-21 Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition in County Cork, Ireland for players under the age of 21. Clubs affiliated to Cork board compete to win this championship. All eight of the divisions in Cork organize their own championship. The divisional winners compete against each other to decide the county title. Trophy The winning team is presented with the Pádraig A. Ó Murchú Cup. This cup commemorates Patrick Aloyius "Weeshie" Murphy of Bere Island, who served the GAA for many years, both as a player and an administrator. Noel Twomey
Noel Twomey (born 1969) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with Macroom, divisional side Muskerry and was also a member of the Cork senior football team. Playing career Twomey first played Gaelic football as a student at the De La Salle College in Macroom, while also lining out at underage levels with the Macroom club. After winning a Cork MFC title in 1986, he progressed to adult level. Twomey was the team's top scorer when Macroom won the Cork IFC title in 1990. He also earned inclusion on the Muskerry divisional team. Twomey first played for Cork as a member of the minor team that lost back-to back All-Ireland minor finals in 1986 and 1987 when he was also team captain. He immediately progressed onto the under-21 team and was at right corner-forward when Cork beat Galway in the 1989 All-Ireland under-21 final. Fintan Goold
Fintan Goold (born 1986 in Macroom, County Cork) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays Gaelic football with his local club Macroom and has been a member of the Cork senior inter-county team since 2005. Playing career Club Goold plays his club football with his local club in Macroom. He first came to prominence as a member of the club’s under-21 team in the early 2000s. He lined out in the final of the county under-21 championship in 2006, however, Beara were the winners on that occasion. Goold lined out in a second consecutive county final in that grade in 2007, however, on this occasion Castlehaven defeated Macroom. Colman Corrigan
Colman Corrigan (born 5 June 1962) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer, selector and manager. At club level he played with Macroom, divisional side Muskerry and at inter-county level with the Cork senior football team. Corrigan also served in a number of management roles at club and inter-county levels. Early life Born and raised in Macroom, County Cork, Corrigan first played as a schoolboy in various juvenile competitions at St. Colman's Boys National School before later lining out as a student at the De La Salle College. Tom Creedon
Tom Creedon (1954 – 28 August 1983) was an Irish sportsperson from Macroom, County Cork. He played Gaelic football with his local club Macroom and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1975 until 1983. Creedon was predominantly a centre back but also played at right corner back and midfield on the Cork team that played in seven Munster finals. He won a National League medal with Cork in 1980. Creedon also played at inter-provincial level with Munster and was a member of the Munster teams that won the Railway Cup in 1977 and 1981. Playing career Club Creedon played his club football with his local club Macroom and captained Macroom teams at all levels from underage to senior level. Hugo Casey
Hugo Casey (1940 – 17 June 2017) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for the Cork Championship club Macroom and at inter-county level with the Cork senior football team. He usually lined out at corner-forward Career Casey joined the Macroom senior team in 1958 and ended the season with a Cork SFC title after a defeat of Avondhu in the final. Macroom was beaten by St. Finbarr's in the 1959 final, with Casey later suffering injury and dropping down to the Macroom junior team the following year. In 1962, with Casey as captain, Macroom won a second Cork SFC title in four seasons after a defeat Muskerry. The Mid Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Ross Oil Junior A Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Muskerry Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1926 for junior Gaelic football teams in the Muskerry region in County Cork, Ireland. The series of games begin in April, with the championship culminating with the final in the autumn. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The Mid Cork Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Football Championship. The Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Football Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAFC) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fifth tier overall in the entire Cork football championship system. The Cork Junior Championship was introduced in 1895 as a countywide competition for teams deemed not eligible for the senior grade or second-string senior teams. At the time of its creation it was the second tier of Cork football. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points.
