Macau Chinese Chamber Of Commerce
The Macau Chinese Chamber of Commerce ( zh, t=澳門中華總商會; pt, Associação Comercial de Macau, abbr. ACM) is one of the most influential business associations in Macau. It was established on 8 January 1913 as the Macao Chamber of Commerce, and changed to its current name in 1916. Origins Founded in the early 20th century, at the encouragement of the Qing government, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce was established with the approval of the Portuguese and Portuguese authorities. This chamber, the predecessor to the Macau Chinese Chamber of Commerce, sought to serve the business interests of the Chinese in the Portuguese territory until its founding charter was revoked in 1911 by the Portuguese colonial administration. Macau or Macao (; ; ; ), officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (MSAR), is a city and special administrative region of China in the western Pearl River Delta by the South China Sea. With a population of about 680,000 and an area of , it is the most densely populated region in the world. Formerly a Portuguese colony, the territory of Portuguese Macau was first leased to Portugal as a trading post by the Ming dynasty in 1557. Qing Government
The Qing dynasty ( ), officially the Great Qing,, was a Manchu-led imperial dynasty of China and the last orthodox dynasty in Chinese history. It emerged from the Later Jin dynasty founded by the Jianzhou Jurchens, a Tungusic-speaking ethnic group who unified other Jurchen tribes to form a new "Manchu" ethnic identity. The dynasty was officially proclaimed in 1636 in Manchuria (modern-day Northeast China and Outer Manchuria). It seized control of Beijing in 1644, then later expanded its rule over the whole of China proper and Taiwan, and finally expanded into Inner Asia. The dynasty lasted until 1912 when it was overthrown in the Xinhai Revolution. Transfer Of Sovereignty Over Macau
The transfer of sovereignty of Macau (; pt, Transferência da soberania de Macau) from Portugal to the People's Republic of China (PRC) occurred on 20 December 1999. Macau was settled by Portuguese merchants in 1557, during the Ming dynasty and was subsequently under various degrees of Portuguese rule until 1999. Portugal's involvement in the region was formally recognised by the Qing dynasty in 1749. Macau Federation Of Trade Unions
The Macau Federation of Trade Unions (MFTU), abbr. is a pro-Beijing labour and political group in Macau. It is the largest and most influential labour group in the city, with over 50,000 members in 43 associated trade unions. Presided by Ho Sut Heng and chaired by Lee Chong Cheng, it currently holds four seats in the Legislative Assembly. History The MFTU and a few other pro-Beijing organisations formed an electoral alliance named the "Union for Development" in the run-up to the 1992 legislative and municipal elections. The MFTU is one of the three major pro-Beijing organisations which have dominated politics in Macau since the 1999 handover, the other two being the Macau Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau. General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau ( zh, t=澳門街坊會聯合總會; pt, União Geral das Associações dos Moradores de Macau), or in short Neighbourhood Union ( zh, t=街坊總會 or zh, t=街總, labels=no), is a pro-Beijing political party in Macau, and is represented in the Legislative Assembly. History The General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau (GUNA) was formed on 30 December 1983, based on the urgent need of unity among Macanese following the social changes brought by the Chinese Government's reform policies. The GUNA provided services ranging from child to elderly care, and from education to community basic services. It was regarded as part of the traditional faction within the pro-Beijing camp.
