Mabel Island (Franz Josef Land)
Mabel Island (russian: text=Остров Мейбел) is an island in Franz Josef Land, Russia. Its area is . History This island was named by Benjamin Leigh Smith after his niece Amable Ludlow (1860–1939). The southernmost headland of Mabel Island is Cape Konrad, named after Russian sailor Alexander Konrad, one of the only two survivors of the Brusilov expedition. Geography Mabel Island lies off Bruce Island's southwestern shore. The highest point is . Most of the island is covered by an ice cap, but an area at the southwestern side is unglacierized. ''Mys Pinegina'' is the headland on the eastern side. Bates Channel is the roughly sound to the north and northeast of Mabel Island that separates it from Bruce Island. Benjamin Leigh Smith
Benjamin Leigh Smith (12 March 1828 – 4 January 1913) was an English Arctic explorer and yachtsman. He is the grandson of the Radical abolitionist William Smith. Early life He was born in Whatlington, Sussex, the extramarital child of Anne Longden, a milliner from Alfreton, and the Whig politician Benjamin Smith (1783–1860), the only son of William Smith, a Radical abolitionist. On a visit to his sister in Derbyshire in 1826, Benjamin senior met Anne Longden. She became pregnant by him and he took her to a rented lodge at Whatlington, a small village near Battle, East Sussex. There she lived as "Mrs Leigh", the surname of his relations on the nearby Isle of Wight. The birth of their first child, Barbara Leigh Smith, created a scandal because the couple did not marry, and within eight weeks Anne was pregnant again. Cape Konrad
A cape is a clothing accessory or a sleeveless outer garment which drapes the wearer's back, arms, and chest, and connects at the neck. Alexander Konrad
Alexander Eduardovich Konrad (russian: Алекса́ндр Эдуа́рдович Ко́нрад; 1890 – 1940) was a Russian sailor. Along with Valerian Albanov, he was one of two survivors, and the only surviving sailor, of the Brusilov expedition in which 22 people died. Biography There are no data about Alexander Konrad's birth and childhood. Alexander Konrad was a member of the crew on the '' Svyataya Anna'', the ship of Georgy Brusilov's 1912 Arctic expedition. The expedition was ill-planned by Captain Brusilov, and the ''Saint Anna'' became locked in the polar ice of the Kara Sea in October 1912. Supplies were abundant, so officers and crew prepared themselves for wintering, hoping to be freed in the following year's thaw. However, during 1913 the sea remained completely frozen. In glaciology, an ice cap is a mass of ice that covers less than of land area (usually covering a highland area). Larger ice masses covering more than are termed ice sheets. Description Ice caps are not constrained by topographical features (i.e., they will lie over the top of mountains).
