Maarten Peeters
Maarten Peeters or Marten Peeters van Ghelle ( – 1566) was a Flemish painter, print publisher and dealer active in Antwerp. Peeters was born in Geel, Duchy of Brabant, around 1500. He was also called Martinus Petri, Merten Peters, and Marteen van Gheele. He moved to Antwerp, where he was active as a painter, print publisher and dealer. He was a member of the guild of traders (''Meerseniers'') in 1524/25. The following year he was reported as part of Antwerp's Guild of Saint Luke as a painter. He was the guild's dean in 1533, 1546, 1558. He was dean five times overall between 1533 and 1559. His son, Maarten II, was reported as ''wijnmeester'', i.e. son of a master. He was active as a publisher in the 1550s and 1560s. He was particularly interested in French and Italian art. Geel () is a city located in the Belgian province of Antwerp, which acquired city status in the 1980s. The Duchy of Brabant was a State of the Holy Roman Empire established in 1183. Guild Of Saint Luke
The Guild of Saint Luke was the most common name for a city guild for painters and other artists in early modern Europe, especially in the Low Countries. They were named in honor of the Evangelist Luke, the patron saint of artists, who was identified by John of Damascus as having painted the Virgin's portrait. One of the most famous such organizations was founded in Antwerp. It continued to function until 1795, although by then it had lost its monopoly and therefore most of its power. In most cities, including Antwerp, the local government had given the Guild the power to regulate defined types of trade within the city. Guild membership, as a master, was therefore required for an artist to take on apprentices or to sell paintings to the public. Francesco Primaticcio
Francesco Primaticcio (April 30, 1504 – 1570) was an Italian Mannerist painter, architect and sculptor who spent most of his career in France. Biography Born in Bologna, he trained under Giulio Romano in Mantua and became a pupil of Innocenzo da Imola, executing decorations at the Palazzo Te before securing a position in the court of Francis I of France in 1532. Together with Rosso Fiorentino he was one of the leading artists to work at the Chateau Fontainebleau (where he is grouped with the so-called "First School of Fontainebleau") spending much of his life there. Lucas Van Leyden
Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 8 August 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver. Lucas was the son of the painter Huygh Jacobsz. He was born, died, and was mainly active in Leiden. Carel van Mander characterizes Lucas as a tireless artist, who as a child annoyed his mother by working long hours after nightfall, which she forbade not only for the cost of candlelight, but also because she felt that too much study was bad for his sensibilities. Willem Adriaensz Key (1516 – 5 June 1568) was a Flemish Renaissance painter. Biography Key was born in Breda, Netherlands. In 1529 he was known to be a pupil of Pieter Coecke van Aelst in Antwerp. Later, together with Frans Floris, he took lessons from Lambert Lombardus in Liège. He became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1540. He was a rich man who lived in a large house in the center of town near the exchange. He was married to Johanna Reyns, who after his death remarried to Maarten Peeters II, son of printer Maarten Peeters. Key's daughter Susanna married painter Huybrecht Beuckeleer. He became specialized in flattering portraits and made a good living from theatrically posed group portraits.
