MV Wight Light
MV ''Wight Light'' is a car and passenger ferry built for the British ferry operator Wightlink. She is in service between mainland England and the Isle of Wight. History ''Wight Light'' was designed by naval architects Hart Fenton & Company and constructed at the Kraljevica shipyard in Croatia. She was launched on 26 January 2008, the first of three vessels commissioned by Wightlink to replace their ageing ferries ''Caedmon'', ''Cenred'' and ''Cenwulf'' on the Yarmouth to Lymington route. MV ''Wight Sky'' is a new design of roll-on/roll-off car and passenger ferry operating on Wightlink's Lymington to Yarmouth, Isle of Wight route. History ''Wight Sky'' was constructed at the Kraljevica shipyard in Croatia and launched on 12 April 2008. After fitting out, she left Croatia on 15 September 2008 and arrived in Portsmouth on 2 October 2008. Design ''Wight Sky'', the second of three new vessels built for Wightlink, is a completely new design of vessel with more comfortable passenger facilities. The design by naval architects Hart Fenton & Company (now Houlder Ltd), utilises fixed and mobile mezzanine decks, complete disabled access and a larger cafe and sundeck area. There is a passenger lift between the car deck and passenger decks. The new vessels do not have the additional third deck of the old C-class ferries, with the space incorporated into the passenger lounges. MV ''Cenwulf'' was one of Wightlink's 'C' class vehicle and passenger ferries on their route from Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. History ''Cenwulf'' was built in 1973 by Robb Caledon Shipbuilders Ltd in Dundee, Scotland, for Sealink Isle of Wight. The ship was named 'Cenwulf' after Coenwulf of Mercia, an Anglo-Saxon king of the Mercians from 796. Her maiden sailing was on 18 October 1973, when she replaced the 1938-built on the Lymington to Yarmouth route. In 1990 ownership passed to Wightlink after the privatisation of Sealink in 1984. MV ''Cenred'' was one of Wightlink's 'C' class vehicle and passenger ferries on their route from Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) is a specialized marine propulsion system (MPS) manufactured by the Voith Group based on a cyclorotor design. It is highly maneuverable, being able to change the direction of its thrust almost instantaneously. It is widely used on tugs and ferries. Operation From a circular plate, rotating around a vertical axis, a circular array of vertical blades (in the shape of hydrofoils) protrude out of the bottom of the ship. Each blade can rotate itself around a vertical axis. The internal gear changes the angle of attack of the blades in sync with the rotation of the plate, so that each blade can provide thrust in any direction.
