MV Hythe Scene
MV ''Hythe Scene'' (formerly MV ''Great Expectations'') is a catamaran ferry operating on the Hythe ferry service. This service connects the town of Hythe and the city of Southampton, across Southampton Water in England. MV ''Great Expectations'' was originally introduced in 1992 and was originally used on the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry service across the River Thames between Kent and Essex, which was at that time operated by White Horse Ferries Ltd. She was named after the Charles Dickens novel, ''Great Expectations'', in which the countryside of Kent and the marshes on the lower regions of the Thames feature heavily. In 1995, White Horse moved ''Great Expectations'' from the Thames to be the front-line vessel on their Hythe service. In 2008, White Horse Ferries spent £50,000 on upgrading the then 16-year-old ''Great Expectations'', including improvements to her main driveshafts. Hythe Pier, Railway And Ferry
Hythe Pier, the Hythe Pier Railway and the Hythe Ferry provide a link between the English port city of Southampton and the Hampshire village of Hythe on the west side of Southampton Water. It is used both by commuters and tourists, and forms an important link in the Solent Way and E9 European coastal paths. The pier, railway and ferry service are currently operated by Blue Funnel Ferries of Southampton. In October 2016 the previous owners ( White Horse Ferries) warned their staff of potential redundancy which suggested an uncertain future from the pier and ferry service. After months of talks Lee Rayment of ''Blue Funnel'' completed negotiations to acquire the Pier, Train and Ferry with operations starting on 21 April 2017. Blue Funnel Group refers to a related set of companies providing boat charter, cruise and ferry services around the Solent and Isle of Wight in vessels up to 500 passengers. The Blue Funnel Cruises operating out of Southampton Port and the Solent Cruises operating out of Portsmouth and Cowes as well as the Hythe Pier, Railway and Ferry operations are all run independently but co-operatively. The 75-126 seat ''Jenny'' series of boats are noted for their high speed of up to 19 knots. History Blue Funnel Cruises was originally formed from two or three companies including the boatbuilding Barkham family who pioneered viewing ocean liners in the 1930s.
