The MV Agusta 500 6 cilindri (''MV Agusta 500 6-cylinder'') was a prototype racing motorcycle built by the Varese company MV Agusta in 1957. Only one prototype was made. Background MV Agusta had won the championship in the 500, 250 and 125 cc classes of the 1956 season. However, the 1957 season promised stiff competition, especially in the premier 500 class, where the Moto Guzzi V8 and the Gilera 500 4C had shown great potential. Undecided whether to go down the road of evolutionary refinement, as Gilera had, or innovation, like the Moto Guzzi, Count Agusta opted for a dual strategy that included the development of the victorious " 500 4C" and, simultaneously, the commissioning of a new multi-cylinder engine. The MV Agusta 500cc road racers were motorcycles that the manufacturer MV Agusta built and which were used to compete in 500cc Grand Prix motorcycle racing series between 1950 and 1976. 18 500cc world championship titles were achieved with these machines ridden by John Surtees, Gary Hocking, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read between 1958 and 1974. History Piero Remor had developed racing engines for the Gilera brand before World War II. In addition to a supercharged 500cc four cylinder engine, he also built a 250cc four cylinder. John Surtees
John Surtees, (11 February 1934 – 10 March 2017) was a British Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and Formula One driver. On his way to become a seven-time Grand Prix motorcycle World Champion, he won his first title in 1956, and followed with three consecutive doubles between 1958 and 1960, winning six World Championships in both the 500 and 350cc classes. Surtees then made the move to the pinnacle of Motorsport, the Formula 1 World Championship, and in 1964 made motor racing history by becoming the F1 World Champion. Dell'Orto is an Italian company, headquartered in Cabiate, specialized in the construction of carburetors and electronic injection systems. A poppet valve (also called mushroom valve) is a valve typically used to control the timing and quantity of gas or vapor flow into an engine. It consists of a hole or open-ended chamber, usually round or oval in cross-section, and a plug, usually a disk shape on the end of a shaft known as a valve stem.
