MSCHF (pronounced "mischief") is an American art collective based in Brooklyn, New York, United States. MSCHF has produced a wide range of artworks, ranging from browser plugins to sneakers, physical products, social media channels and AI generated foot photographs. History The group was founded in 2016 by Gabriel Whaley, who acts as its CEO. As of January 2020, MSCHF was reported to have received $11.5 million USD in funding. The group operates as a company under the name MSCHF Product Studio, Inc. Releases The group announces the availability of their work in numbered "drops". In May 2018 MSCHF released its first work, titled '' The Persistence of Chaos''. The work was a single 2008 Windows laptop loaded with six malware programs. Satan Shoes
Satan Shoes were a series of custom Nike Air Max 97 shoes, created in 2021 as a collaboration between musician Lil Nas X and MSCHF, an art collective. Their design and marketing gained controversy through prominent satanic imagery. Nike, Inc. sued MSCHF for trademark infringement, false designation of origin, trademark dilution, and unfair competition. Design and promotion Each pair of shoes is black, and features a bronze pentagram on the laces and an Cross of Saint Peter, inverted cross, while on the sides of the shoes is a reference to the Bible, Biblical passage Luke 10:18. MSCHF claims that the shoes are made with "60cc of ink and 1 drop of human blood". According to MSCHF co-founder Daniel Greenberg, the blood came from "about six" MSCHF employees. The Nike Air Max 97 is part of the Nike Air Max line of shoes sold and released by Nike, Inc. Overview The Nike Air Max 97 was first released in 1997. The design of the shoe is commonly thought to be inspired by the bullet trains of Japan, but the design was inspired by mountain bikes. ''The Persistence of Chaos'' is a work of art consisting of a laptop that contains six computer viruses, worms, and pieces of malware that have caused major damage. The artwork was created in 2019 by artist Guo O Dong and the collective MSCHF, and sold at auction for $1,345,000 in May 2019. Guo O Dong described it as a bestiary for historical malware, and expressed concern about the high price for which it sold, stating that he would either spend the money on another project or burn it. A tontine () is an investment linked to a living person which provides an income for as long as that person is alive. Such schemes originated as plans for governments to raise capital in the 17th century and became relatively widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries.
