Myrna Driedger
Myrna Driedger (' ') (born 1952) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. She is a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. Early life She was born in Benito, Manitoba, and was educated at Benito Collegiate, at the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing and at Red River Community College. Before entering provincial politics, Driedger worked as a nurse for 23 years. She served as CEO of Child Find Manitoba, and was Co-Chair of the province's Abuse Prevention Services Adult Advisory Committee. She has also participated in other groups which provide services to poor and vulnerable children. At one stage, she was Manitoba President of the Canadian Association of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nurses. She is married to Helmut Driedger. Politics Driedger was elected to the provincial legislature in a 1998 by-election, in the upscale west Winnipeg riding of Charleswood. Young Offenders Act
The ''Young Offenders Act'' (YOA; french: Loi sur les jeunes contrevenants) (the ''Act'') was an act of the Parliament of Canada, granted Royal Assent in 1982 and proclaimed in force on April 2, 1984, that regulated the criminal prosecution of Canadian youths. The act was repealed in 2003 with the passing of the ''Youth Criminal Justice Act''. The ''Act'' established the national age of criminal responsibility at 12 years old, and said that youths can be prosecuted only if they break a law of the ''Criminal Code'' (previously, youths could be prosecuted or punished solely on the grounds that it was in the youth's best interests). The New Democratic Party of Manitoba (french: Nouveau Parti démocratique du Manitoba) is a social-democratic political party in Manitoba, Canada. It is the provincial wing of the federal New Democratic Party, and is a successor to the Manitoba Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. It is currently the opposition party in Manitoba. 1999 Manitoba General Election
The 1999 Manitoba general election was held on September 21, 1999 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The New Democratic Party (NDP) was returned to government after sitting in opposition since the 1988 election. The NDP won 32 seats, against 24 for the Progressive Conservative Party. The Manitoba Liberal Party won one seat. The Manitoba PC Party declined in popularity due to unpopular budget cuts on the healthcare system, social programs, and civil servants. Gary Albert Filmon (born August 24, 1942) is Canadian politician from Manitoba. He was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba from 1983 to 2000, and served as the 19th premier of Manitoba from 1988 to 1999. Political career Early life and municipal career Filmon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to working class parents, and is of Romanian and Polish-Ukrainian background.
