''Myriopteris aemula'', the Texas lip fern or rival lip fern, is a moderately-sized fern of Texas and Mexico, a member of the family Pteridaceae. Unlike many members of its genus, its leaves have a few hairs on upper and lower surfaces, or lack them entirely. One of the cheilanthoid ferns, it was usually classified in the genus ''Cheilanthes'' as ''Cheilanthes aemula'' until 2013, when the genus ''Myriopteris'' was again recognized as separate from ''Cheilanthes''. It typically grows on limestone rock. Description Leaf bases are closely spaced along the rhizome, variously described as or in diameter. The rhizome bears persistent scales, which are linear to narrowly lanceolate, straight or slightly twisted, and loosely appressed (pressed against the surface of the rhizome). William Ralph Maxon
William Ralph Maxon, (February 27, 1877February 25, 1948) was an American botanist and pteridologist. He graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Philosophy, B.Ph. in biology, in 1898, and spent about one year at Columbia University doing post-graduate work on ferns with Lucien Marcus Underwood. In 1899 he accepted a position with the National Museum of Natural History, United States National Museum, which was a part of the Smithsonian Institution; he remained at the museum for his entire career. In 1899 he became an aide with the Division of Plants. He was named assistant curator in 1905, associate curator in 1914, and curator of that Division in 1937. Edward Palmer (January 12, 1829 – April 10, 1911) was a self-taught British botanist and an early American archaeologist. Biography Edward Palmer was born on 12 January 1829 in Norfolk and baptised on 22 February 1829 at Brandon, Suffolk, England, the son of Robert and Mary Palmer. He emigrated to the United States in 1850, where he initially settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He travelled to South America and became a medical doctor, serving with the Union Army during the American Civil War.
