Myer Kangan
Myer Kangan (12 July 1917 – 4 October 1991) was an Australian public servant and educationist, who is considered the founder of the technical and further education (TAFE) system after he conducted an inquiry into technical education in Australia on behalf of the Whitlam government. Kangan was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1917 and was of Russian Jewish descent. He attended Brisbane State High School, and then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. He joined the Commonwealth public service during World War II on an aircraft design project, and later joined the Department of Labour. In 1973, the federal minister for education, Kim Beazley, agreed to a proposal by the Technical Teachers' Association of Australia (TTTA) to hold an inquiry into technical education in Australia. Technical and further education or simply TAFE (), is the common name in English-speaking countries in Oceania for vocational education, as a subset of tertiary education. Australian Jews, or Jewish Australians, ( he, יהודים אוסטרלים, translit=yehudim ostralim) are Jews who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. In the 2016 census, there were 21,175 Australians who identified as Jewish by ancestry, a decrease from 25,716 in the 2011 census, and 91,016 Australians who identified as adherents of Judaism, which is a 6% decrease on 97,355 adherents of Judaism in the 2011 census. The actual number is almost certainly higher, because an answer to the religion question on the census was optional and because Holocaust survivors, Haredi Jews or many non-practising Jews are believed to prefer not to disclose religion in the census. By comparison, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz estimated a Jewish-Australian population of 120,000-150,000 (not limited to adherents of Judaism), while other estimates based on the death rate in the community estimate the size of the community as 250,000. Kangan Institute
Kangan Institute is a TAFE (technical and further education) provider in Melbourne, Australia. History Kangan Institute was established as the Broadmeadows College of TAFE on 28 February 1986, when it was formally opened by Prime Minister Bob Hawke. It was originally built to cater for 3000 students at a cost of $13.5 million. It subsequently acquired a series of other campuses in its first decade, including at Avondale Heights, Essendon and Moreland. In August 1995, the institution was renamed the Kangan Institute of TAFE in honour of Myer Kangan, the founder of the TAFE system in Australia. On 1 July 1997, it merged with the John Batman College of TAFE to form Kangan Batman TAFE. The merger resulted in the closure of the former John Batman TAFE's campus in Gaffney Street, Coburg, but the amalgamated body expanded again in 1998 when it absorbed the Richmond Automotive Campus of Barton TAFE after a major state government review.
