My Rainbow Valley
"My Rainbow Valley" is a song first recorded and released by American singer Robert Knight on his 1967 album ''Everlasting Love''. It was later released as a single in May 1968. However, the song is better known for being covered by British band the Love Affair, whose version was released as "Rainbow Valley", and which became a top-ten hit in several countries. The Love Affair version "Rainbow Valley" was written by Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden, who had written the band's previous number-one single "Everlasting Love", which had also been first released by Robert Knight. After finding out about the Love Affair's version of "Rainbow Valley", Knight said "They sure follow me around, don't they?... I suppose I should be flattered that they like my voice and style enough to copy my songs". Love Affair were a London-based pop and progressive rock group formed in 1966. The group had several UK Singles Chart Top 10 hits, including the number one success, " Everlasting Love". History Love Affair's first single, "She Smiled Sweetly", written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and released on Decca Records, flopped, but the band reached the top of the UK Singles Chart in January 1968 with " Everlasting Love". By this time the group had relocated to CBS Records. The song was first recorded by Robert Knight, whose version had reached No. 13 in the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in the autumn of 1967, and it was previously offered to Marmalade, who turned it down. On the B-side was a cover version of "Gone Are the Songs of Yesterday", which was written by Phillip Goodhand-Tait. "I Don't Want Our Loving to Die" is a single by the English rock band the Herd, released in March 1968. Written by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, it was the last of the band's three hits on the UK Singles Chart and their most successful, reaching number five in May 1968. The song was generally well received by the music press, with several critics noting its contrast against the Herd's previous hit singles. Background and composition "I Don't Want Our Loving to Die" marked a change in style for the Herd, dispensing with the orchestral arrangements and classical allusions that had marked their two previous singles "From the Underworld" and "Paradise Lost". The band wished to replicate the sound they achieved in live performances and referred to the song's syncopated rhythm as "rock-ska". Record Retailer
''Record Retailer'' was the only music trade newspaper for the UK record industry. It was founded in August 1959 as a monthly newspaper covering both labels and dealers. Its founding editor was Roy Parker (who died on 27 December 1964). The title changed to ''Record Retailer and Music Industry News'' shortly after launch. With its issue of 10 March 1960, ''Record Retailer'' became a weekly magazine and started a chart showing the top 50 records in sales. For the period until February 1969, when a standardised UK chart was established with the British Market Research Bureau, the Official Charts Company recognises the listings compiled by ''Record Retailer'' as representing the official national chart. On 5 October 1967 the title reverted to ''Record Retailer'' and in January 1971 became ''Record & Tape Retailer''. The publication was relaunched on 18 March 1972 as ''Music Week''. ''Melody Maker'' was a British weekly music magazine, one of the world's earliest music weeklies; according to its publisher, IPC Media, the earliest. It was founded in 1926, largely as a magazine for dance band musicians, by Leicester-born composer, publisher Lawrence Wright; the first editor was Edgar Jackson. Bongo Drum
Bongos ( es, bongó) are an Afro-Cuban percussion instrument consisting of a pair of small open bottomed hand drums of different sizes. They are struck with both hands, most commonly in an eight-stroke pattern called ''martillo'' (hammer). The larger drum is called a hembra (Spanish for female) and the smaller drum is called the macho (Spanish for male). They are mainly employed in the rhythm section of son cubano and salsa ensembles, often alongside other drums such as the larger congas and the stick-struck timbales. This brought bongos into our cultural vocabulary, from Beatniks to Mambo to the current revival of Cuban folkloric music. Bongo drummers (''bongoseros'') emerged as the only drummers of son cubano ensembles in eastern Cuba toward the end of the 19th century. Penelope Ann Valentine (13 February 1943 – 9 January 2003) was a British music journalist, rock critic, and occasional television personality. Biography Penny Valentine was born in London, of Jewish and Italian ancestry. In 1959 she became a trainee reporter, first on the ''Uxbridge Post'', and in the early 1960s on ''Boyfriend'', a weekly magazine for teen girls. In 1964, she joined the staff of '' Disc'', a weekly pop music magazine (later ''Disc and Music Echo''), as a journalist and record reviewer, becoming for a time Britain's most influential reviewer of new pop singles. Peter Langley Jones (6 January 1930 – 10 July 2015) was a British journalist, author, editor, promoter and presenter who wrote mainly on show business matters, especially pop music, for magazines including ''Record Mirror'' and '' Billboard''.
