Muwekma Ohlone
The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe is an unrecognized organization for people who identify as descendants of the Ohlone, an historic Indigenous people of California. The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe is the largest of several groups in the San Francisco Bay Area that identify as Ohlone tribes. They are descendants of the Verona Band of Alameda County. Status The organization is not recognized as a Native American tribe by the federal government or by the California state government, which does not recognize any state tribes. Petition for federal recognition The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, formerly known as the Ohlone/Costanoan Muwekma Tribe, applied for federal recognition as a Native American tribe; however, in their petition was denied in 2002. American Indian tribal recognition in the United States most often refers to the process of a tribe being recognized by the United States federal government, or to a person being granted membership to a federally recognized tribe. Cafe Ohlone
Cafe Ohlone, also called ‘oṭṭoy, is a restaurant in Berkeley, California at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology. It was founded by Ohlone chefs Louis Trevino and Vincent Medina as a pop-up in 2018, and as a semi-permanent café in 2022. It features a seasonal menu of California Indian cuisine and is the world's only Ohlone restaurant. History Louis Trevino and Vincent Medina, who are partners, first met at an Indigenous language conference in 2014. The two began working together and founded mak-'amham — an Ohlone cultural organization — in September 2017. The following year, the two opened the first Indigenous restaurant in the state of California as a pop-up in the courtyard of the University Press Bookstore in Berkeley. Vincent Medina
Vincent Medina (born October 6, 1986) is an Indigenous rights, Indigenous language, and food activist from California. He co-founded Cafe Ohlone, an Ohlone restaurant in Berkeley, California which serves Indigenous cuisine made with Native ingredients sourced from the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas. As of 2019 he was serving on the Muwekma council, and he is ''Capitán'', or cultural leader, of the ‘Itmay Cultural Association. He is a Chochenyo Ohlone member of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, an Indigenous Californian non-profit organization who are not federally recognized or state recognized. Medina is also a board member of Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival. Medina speaks English, Spanish, and Chochenyo.
