Mustafa Güzelgöz
Mustafa Güzelgöz (1921 – 18 February 2005) was a Turkish librarian. He established and operated a traveling library which circulated among 36 villages in the Ürgüp district, becoming known as the "Librarian with the Donkey" ( tr, Eşekli kütüphaneci). By the time of his retirement, he had also established 12 permanent libraries, as well as innovated cultural activities such as sewing and carpentry courses, folk dances, choir, and music band works, cinema screenings, photography works, sports organizations, and a village newspaper. Early years Mustafa Güzelgöz was born in a village of the Ürgüp district in Nevşehir Province of Central Anatolia in 1921. He sought work in Istanbul, and was conscripted in 1940, serving three and half years in the military during World War II. He returned to his hometown in 1944 and was unemployed. Maltepe University ( tr, Maltepe Ãœniversitesi) is a private university located in Maltepe district of Istanbul, Turkey. It was established on July 9, 1997 by "Istanbul Marmara Education Foundation" (Ä°MEV). The institution has a broad scope of education starting from the elementary level to university. The first students graduated in June 2001. Halkevleri (Turkish: ''Halkevi'' literally meaning "people's houses", also translatable as "community centres") is the name of a Turkish community enlightenment project. They were founded in 1932 and entirely abolished in 1951. Background The Turkish Republic was proclaimed in 1923 after a series of costly wars involving the Ottoman Empire. The human loss was great, especially among the intellectuals. Also, the most profitable agricultural land had been lost, and the country was economically bankrupt. After the republic was proclaimed, measures were taken to raise the low literacy rate and to improve the economy. However, the great depression was another blow to the new republic. Fakir Baykurt or born Tahir Baykurt (15 June 1929 – 11 October 1999) was a Turkish author and trade unionist. Early life Fakir Baykurt was born Tahir on 15 June 1929, son of Elif and Veli Baykurt, in Akçaköy which is a district of Burdur, Turkey. His birth date is not known accurately however he pointed out that he was born in middle of June, 1929 by his mothers memoirs. His family gave him name of his uncle Tahir who died in battle. Tahir enrolled at Akçaköy Primary School in 1936 and lost his father just two years later. After his father's death, Tahir moved to Burhaniye, Bursa by aid of his uncle Osman ErdoÄŸuÅŸ in purpose of earning money by textile works.
