The Everly Brothers
The Everly Brothers were an American rock duo, known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (February 1, 1937 – August 21, 2021) and Phillip "Phil" Everly (January 19, 1939 – January 3, 2014), the duo combined elements of rock and roll, country, and pop, becoming pioneers of country rock. The duo was raised in a musical family, first appearing on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as "The Everly Family" in the 1940s. When the brothers were still in high school, they gained the attention of prominent Nashville musicians like Chet Atkins, who began to promote them for national attention. The Shakin' Pyramids (also known as Shakin' Pyramids) were a Scottish rockabilly band formed in Glasgow in 1980. The band consisted of Dave Duncan (vocals, harmonica, percussion) James G. Creighton (acoustic and electric guitar, vocals) and "Railroad" Ken McLellan (acoustic guitar, vocals). During the band's recording career from 1980–1983, they released two studio albums, four singles, and three extended plays—the last of which was recorded with the British musician Lonnie Donegan. Although the Shakin' Pyramids did not enjoy any major chart successes, their output was well-received by critics and has been described as having helped define the rockabilly revival of the early 1980s. ''Back Home'' is a compilation LP consisting of Merle Travis's album, ''Folk Songs of the Hills'' (1947), with four previously unreleased tracks. This album marked a new turn in Travis's career, bringing his Kentucky-style fingerpicking and down-home vocal style to the attention of a broad public of country and folk music enthusiasts at the onset of the American folk music revival. Together with another Capitol release the following year, '' The Merle Travis Guitar'', it introduced the style of guitar playing that came to be known, in simplified form, as Travis picking. ''Both Sides Of An Evening'' is the fifth studio album and released in 1961 by The Everly Brothers. Though it was released at the peak of their career, it failed to make any of the record charts. Fourteen songs were laid down for the album, in two halves (the first seven, for side A, were marked "For dancing", and the second seven, for side B, marked "For dreaming"). The completed album was recorded in only three days worth of sessions. It was produced by Bill Porter. Prior to the album's release, half-minute excerpts of the songs were released on a Souvenir sampler, purchasable for a single dollar. Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Bruce Eder wrote of the album "...the duo's most ambitious and mature record to date, but it just wasn't terribly exciting or of much interest (especially the second side) to the teenagers that made up the vast bulk of their audience." It is a collection of traditional songs from his home of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, including original compositions evoking working life on the railroads and in the coal mines.
