Museum Of Modern Art Australia (MOMAA)
The Museum of Modern Art Australia (MOMAA), alternatively named the 'Museum of Modern Art of Australia,' or, according to McCulloch, the 'Museum of Modern Art and Design' (MOMAD), was founded by Australian art patron John Reed in 1958 in Tavistock Place, a lane-way off 376 Flinders Street, Melbourne, launched previously with a survey of Modernist Victorian women artists on 1 June 1956, organised by the Reeds who had taken on the then named Gallery of Contemporary Art. It held exhibitions of important contemporary Australian and international art of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Museum operated until 1966 and was formally dissolved in 1981. Alan McLeod McCulloch Officer of the Order of Australia, AO (5 August 1907 – 21 December 1992) was one of Australia's foremost art critics for more than 60 years, an art historian and gallery director, cartoonist, and painter. Early life Alan McLeod McCulloch was born to Annie (née Mcleod) and Alexander on 5 August 1907 in St Kilda, Victoria, St Kilda in Melbourne, and brought up in Mosman, New South Wales, Mosman, Sydney. His father encouraged a sense that "the arts were the most important thing in life," so Alan developed keen interest in art as a child. Peter Burns (architect)
Peter Bryant Burns (27 June 1924 – 2020) was an Australian architect and artist who practised from 1952 to 1989. He was known for his involvement in Contemporary Art Society exhibitions, his co-founding of the journal Architecture and Arts and his contributions to the Australian post-war Modern Art movement. Personal life Peter Burns was born in Geelong, Victoria on 27 June 1924. He began his architectural studies under the patronage of the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme, after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as an aircrew trainee. From 1947 – 1953 he completed a Fellowship Diploma in architecture, first from the Melbourne Technical College (presently known as RMIT) and then the University of Melbourne. Burns died in 2020. Norman Myer
Sir Norman Myer (25 May 1897 – 17 December 1956) was an Australian businessman best known for his role in the development of the Myer department store. Early life Myer was born Nahum Moshe Baevski in 1897 in Tatarsk Smolensk, Russia. He studied at Ashwick School (run by C. H. Nash) and Wesley College. Georges Mora (26 June 1913 – 7 June 1992) was a German-born Australian entrepreneur, art dealer, patron, connoisseur and restaurateur. Early life Mora was born Gunter Morawski on 26 June 1913 in Leipzig, Germany, of Jewish Polish heritage. As a young medical student Mora became a member of a communist cell and fled Germany to Paris in 1930. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Georges left Paris to join the cause. After a plane crash, he was a prisoner of war for a short time. He was active in the French Resistance in World War II, using the alias Georges Morand. After the War, Georges worked as a patent dealer and became the director of a Jewish rehabilitation home for children run by Œuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE) in Paris. He was well known in the 1990s as the media heir and business tycoon who privatised the publicly listed media company, John Fairfax Holdings Limited in 1987; only for the privatised company to fail three years later in spectacular fashion. Sir John Vincent William Barry QC (13 June 1903 – 8 November 1969) was an Australian justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, and an expert in criminology. Early life Born the eldest child of William Edward Barry and Sarah Lena Jeanette, née Keene in Albury, New South Wales, Barry was educated at St Patrick's College, a small convent school in Goulburn. Mirka Mora
Mirka Madeleine Mora (18 March 1928 – 27 August 2018) was a French-born Australian visual artist and cultural figure who contributed significantly to the development of contemporary art in Australia. Her media included drawing, painting, sculpture and mosaic. Early life Mirka Mora was born in Paris to a Lithuanian Jewish father, Leon Zelik, and a Romanian Jewish mother, Celia Gelbein. She was arrested in 1942 during the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup (''Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv''). Her father, Leon, managed to arrange for her release from the concentration camp at Pithiviers (Loiret) before Mora and her mother were scheduled to be deported to Auschwitz. Laurence Hope (9 March 1927 – 3 February 2016) was an Australian artist from Sydney who is best known for his ''Lover, Dreamers and Isolates'' paintings. Early years Laurence Hope was raised in an artistic environment, his parents, Norman and Gertrude Hope, were practicing artists who met at Brisbane Central Technical College, Brisbane Technical College in the 1920s.
