Museum Of Monterey
The Museum of Monterey - Stanton Center, also known as the Monterey History & Maritime Museum, tells the history of Monterey and the surrounding area through the lens of its connection to the sea. Free to the public, it houses thousands of artifacts. It includes permanent exhibits on the 1935 disaster off Point Sur, the Ohlone and Rumsien tribes that once lived in the area, the Spanish exploration of the California coast and the Monterey sardine industry. It is operated by the Monterey History and Art Association. History The museum began in 1971 as the Allen Knight Maritime Museum. Allen Knight
Allen Knight, (May 7, 1901 – August 24, 1964) was an American merchant seaman and political figure in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. He is best know for his service on the Carmel City Council, including a two-year term as mayor, and for co-founding the Sundial Lodge. In 2016 the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association acquired the Allen Knight's maritime collection. Early life Knight was born on May 7, 1901, in San Francisco, California. His father was Allen Knight and his mother was Lily C. Knight. Knight's parents and his two unmarried aunts, Agnes and Alice Miller, purchased three lots on the intersection of Monte Verde Street 7th Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) an art museum located in Monterey, California. It was founded in 1959 as a chapter of the American Federation of Arts. The Monterey Museum of Art collects, preserves, and interprets the art of California from the nineteenth century to the present day. Notable holdings celebrate the heritage of Northern and Central California, and especially for early California images from the Carmel Art Colony. The museum operates two facilities, one at 559 Pacific Street and the other at 720 Via Mirada (La Mirada).
