Murrumbidgee Irrigation Limited (MI) is one of five privately owned irrigation companies in New South Wales, Australia. It provides irrigation water and drainage services to an area known as the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA). MI manages 500 million of infrastructure assets, has an annual turnover of $40 million, and services over 2.5 billion in water entitlements. History The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) was established in 1912 following the commissioning of Burrinjuck Dam in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. Griffith is a major regional city in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area that is located in the north-western part of the Riverina region of New South Wales, known commonly as the food bowl of Australia. The Snowy Mountains Scheme or Snowy scheme is a hydroelectricity and irrigation complex in south-east Australia. The Scheme consists of sixteen major dams; nine power stations; two pumping stations; and of tunnels, pipelines and aqueducts that were constructed between 1949 and 1974. The Scheme was completed under the supervision of Chief Engineer, Sir William Hudson. It is the largest engineering project undertaken in Australia.
