Murray Martin
Murray Martin (27 January 1943 – 14 August 2007) was a British documentary and docudrama filmmaker. He was a founding and lifelong member of Amber Film & Photography Collective, with whom he made many films including ''Seacoal'' (1985), ''In Fading Light'' (1989) and '' Eden Valley'' (1994). Life and work Martin was born in Stoke-on-Trent and attended a grammar school there, Longton High School. He studied fine art at Newcastle University in the early 1960s; taught art history for a short while at Newcastle Polytechnic then in 1966 began studying filmmaking at Regent Street Polytechnic in London. Martin along with photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and filmmaker Graham Denman, came together in London in 1968 around his vision to found Amber Film & Photography Collective. Amber Film & Photography Collective
Amber Film & Photography Collective (often shortened to Amber Films or Amber) is a film and photography collective based in Newcastle upon Tyne with an aim to capture working-class life in North East England. Often combining professional and non-professional actors, Amber has produced several documentary and feature films of varying lengths, sometimes blending documentary with fiction. Their productions have included ''Seacoal'' and '' Eden Valley'', along with a drama-documentary about 1960s Newcastle City Council leader, T. Dan Smith. Although Amber have received little national attention, scholar Mike Wayne suggests they are "possibly the most successful 'studio' -- in terms of sheer longevity -- in British film history". Eden Valley (film)
''Eden Valley'' is a 1994 British drama film conceived, written, produced, directed, photographed and edited by the Amber Production Team. Plot The film is set within a harness racing fraternity and explores the conflict between urban and rural values through the medium of an evolving relationship between father and son. The main character in the film, Hoggy, abandoned his wife and son ten years earlier to establish himself in an alternative lifestyle, living in a caravan and caring for his horses. The world gets turned upside down by the arrival of his teenage son, who has a prison sentence hanging over him. Billy has lived his life on an inner-city housing estate, and in his lifestyle theft and drugs are the norm. Using dramatic seasonal changes within the horse-trainer's environment the film follows the development of this fragile relationship. Grammar School
A grammar school is one of several different types of school in the history of education in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries, originally a school teaching Latin, but more recently an academically oriented secondary school, differentiated in recent years from less academic secondary modern schools. Longton High School
Longton High School was a school in Longton and later Meir, Staffordshire from 1760 to 2010. History The school was founded in 1760 with an endowment from John Bourne and was known as the Longton Free School. By 1763, enough money had been provided for the purchase of land and the construction of a school building, on land near to St John's church in Longton. In the 1820s, the trustees decided to merge the school with the nearby St John's national school and the school lost its separate identity for some years. The national school closed some time between 1859 and 1872 and the trustees of the Bourne estate decided to recreate the free school as a secondary school. The Endowed Schools Act 1869 enabled the trustees to sell the old property and in 1885 a new school was built in Trentham Road, Longton.
