Murray Guy Gallery
Murray Guy was a contemporary art gallery specializing in emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Founded by Margaret Murray and Janice Guy in 1998, the gallery was located in the Chelsea, Manhattan gallery district at 453 West 17th Street. It closed in early 2017 after eighteen years in business. The gallery covered contemporary photography, video, film, sculpture, and painting. Founders Margaret Murray and Janice Guy. Art Gallery
An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. The long gallery in Elizabethan and Jacobean houses served many purposes including the display of art. Historically, art is displayed as evidence of status and wealth, and for religious art as objects of ritual or the depiction of narratives. Leidy Churchman
Leidy Churchman (born 1979 in Villanova, PA) is an American painter who lives and works in New York. Early life and education Churchman received their M.F.A. from Columbia University in 2010 and B.A. from Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts, in 2002. From 2011–12, they were a resident artist at Rijksakademie van Beeldende in Amsterdam. The artist's work has been reviewed in the ''New York Times'' and ''Artforum''. Career Churchman first presented their work publicly in 2002 through queer feminist journal and art collective LTTR, which also included artists K8 Hardy, Every Ocean Hughs (then Emily Roysdon), and Ginger Brooks. Contemporary history, in English-language historiography, is a subset of modern history that describes the historical period from approximately 1945 to the present. Patricia Esquivias
Patricia Esquivias is a Venezuelan-born Spanish artist who works primarily with video. She was born in 1979 in Caracas. Esquivias received her BA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2001 and her MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2007. Esquivias' work is often characterized as a form of story telling, and Esquivias often acts as narrator, using her own voice as narration in her videos. Kota Ezawa
Kota Ezawa (born 1969, Cologne, West Germany) is a Japanese-German American artist and arts educator. His artwork usually responds to current events from sources in the news, pop culture, and art history. Ever since his debut 2002 video animation of ''The Simpson Verdict,'' Ezawa has been known for his flattened style in works on paper, light-boxes, and videos. By flattening his pieces into more two-dimensional figures, he creates more focus on the re-contextualized historical events in his pieces. Lucy Skaer
Lucy Skaer (born 1975) is a contemporary English artist who works with sculpture, film, painting, and drawing. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Skaer is a member of the Henry VIII’s Wives artist collective, and has exhibited a number of works with the group. She currently lives and works in Glasgow and London. Early life and education Skaer was born in Cambridge. She studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. Barbara Probst
Barbara Probst (born 1964) is a contemporary artist whose photographic work consists of multiple images of a single scene, shot simultaneously with several cameras via a radio-controlled system. Using a mix of color and black-and-white film, she poses her subjects, positioning each lens at a different angle, and then triggers the cameras’ shutters all at once, creating tableaux of two or more individually framed images. Although the pictures are of the same subject and are taken at the same instant, they provide a range of perspectives. She lives and works in both New York City and Munich. Layla Rosalind Nashashibi (born 1973) is a Palestinian-English artist based in London. Nashashibi works mainly with 16 mm film but also makes paintings and prints. Her work often deals with everyday observations merged with mythological elements, considering the relationships and moments between community and extended family. Zoe Leonard
Zoe Leonard (born 1961) is an American artist who works primarily with photography and sculpture. She has exhibited widely since the late 1980s and her work has been included in a number of seminal exhibitions including Documenta IX and Documenta XII, and the 1993, 1997 and 2014 Whitney biennials. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020. Early life Leonard was born in 1961 in Liberty, New York. Leonard's mother was a Polish refugee who was born in Warsaw, immigrating to America at the age of 9 during World War II. Her mother's family were wealthy members of the Polish aristocracy who were involved in the movement for Polish independence and the Polish Resistance. An-My Lê (born 1960) is a Vietnamese American photographer, and professor at Bard College. She is a 2012 MacArthur Foundation Fellow and has received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1997), the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program Award (2007), and the Tiffany Comfort Foundation Fellowship (2010).
