His older brother Selwyn, who was also a speedway rider, helped him when he began riding. In 1965 he won the New Zealand Speedway Championship and in 1966 was runner up to Bob Andrews. In 1967, he trialed for the Wimbledon Dons and won a team place. Later in the season he was loaned out to the Newcastle Diamonds. The Wimbledon Dons were a professional motorcycle speedway team who operated from the Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane in London.Jacobs, N. Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the SGB Championship, every Sunday night during the season (March–October) from their home at the Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium, previously known as Brough Park, is primarily used for greyhound racing with the speedway track built in the centre. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Bob Andrews (born 27 October 1935) is a former international speedway rider from England and New Zealand. Speedway career Andrews was a leading rider in the 1960s and reached the final of the Speedway World Championship on four occasions in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1956-1970, riding for various clubs. Andrews was capped by England 21 times and Great Britain 12 times.
