Muriel Leung
Muriel Leung is an American writer. Her work includes the poetry collection ''Bone Confetti'', which won the 2015 Noemi Press Book Award and ''Imagine Us, The Swarm,'' which received the Nightboat’s Poetry Prize. She has received multiple writing fellowships, and her work was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Early life Leung grew up in Richmond Hills, New York. Her first language is Cantonese. She learned English in elementary school. On her mother's side, she has family members who were garment workers on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Her father emigrated to the United States from Hong Kong under refugee status, and went on to own a restaurant. She received her undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College. Noemi Press
Noemi Press is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) publisher. Noemi Press was founded in 2002 to publish and promote the work of emerging and established writers, with a special emphasis on writers traditionally underrepresented by larger publishers, including women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIAP writers. Noemi publishes about five books a year, including the Noemi Press Awards in Poetry. They also collaborate with Letras Latinas to produce the Akrilica series. History Publisher and editor-in-chief Carmen Giménez and founding editor Evan Lavender-Smith began Noemi Press in 2002 by publishing a single chapbook. It has since grown to include full-length poetry, nonfiction, critical work, drama, and fiction. Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation (VONA) is a written arts organization that was founded in 1999 by Pulitzer-prize winning author Junot Diaz, along with award-winning author Elmaz Abinader, Víctor Díaz and Diem Jones in order to provide emerging writers of color with workshops and mentoring by established writers of color. Since its founding, over 2,000 aspiring writers from around the world have been involved in their programs.
