Munson, New York
Munson is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. Although often now associated as being part of Franklin Square and West Hempstead, the name lives on through the local fire department. Prior to May 1895, the area was known as Washington Square. History The community is named for Harry Munson, who was a prominent local and a veteran of the Civil War; Munson had moved to the area in 1891. The name was chosen when the residents wanted the United States Postal Service to open a local post office. Like Franklin Square, the area was known for some time as Washington Square, and like what happened in Franklin Square some twenty years prior when residents there wanted a post office, the USPS refused so long as the name had "Washington" in it, in order to avoid confusion with all of the other places in New York with Washington in their names. West Hempstead, New York
West Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,835 at the 2020 census. It is an unincorporated area in the Town of Hempstead and is represented by Councilman Edward Ambrosino. The residents in the hamlet had once unsuccessfully proposed to change their hamlet's name to Mayfair Park. History West Hempstead first appeared on maps as the name of a Long Island Railroad station in 1893. The Town of Brookhaven is the most populous of the ten towns of Suffolk County, New York, United States. Part of the New York metropolitan area, it is located approximately 50 miles from Manhattan. It is the largest of the state of New York's 932 towns by area (when water area is included), and the second most populous after the Town of Hempstead. The first settlement in what is now Brookhaven was known as Setauket. Hagerman is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 1,450 at the 1990 census. The Nassau County Police Department is the law enforcement agency of Nassau County, New York. History In 1925, concerned about rising crime rates, the County Board of Supervisors voted to create the Nassau County Police Department, replacing a scattered system of constables and town and village police departments. Interlaken is a village in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. The name is related to the village's position between two lakes. The Village of Interlaken is in the northern part of the Town of Covert and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History First settled in the late 1790s and early 1800s, the Village of Interlaken was home to many families from the New England and New Jersey areas. Franklin Square, New York
Franklin Square is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York, United States. The hamlet is an unincorporated area in the Town of Hempstead. The population was 29,320 at the 2010 census. The area was originally known as Trimming Square and then as Washington Square. History What is now Franklin Square was near the center of the Hempstead Plains, and used as grazing land, and later farmland, by the first white settlers. The southern portion included oak and dogwood forests. In late 1643, Robert Fordham and John Carman made a treaty with members of the Massapequak, Mericoke, Matinecock and Rockaway tribes to buy roughly 100 square miles upon which they intended to start a new settlement.
