Munro Lake
Munro Lake is an inland lake located in Cheboygan County on the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. The lake discharges into Douglas Lake and, ultimately, into the East Branch Maple River. Much of the lakeshore is publicly owned, being part of the Mackinaw State Forest. The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council characterizes Munro Lake as a groundwater-fed, relatively shallow lake. Carved by glaciers, it now provides a home for northern pike, bass, and panfish. It has a surface area of , a shoreline of , and a maximum depth of . Cheboygan County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 25,579. The county seat is Cheboygan. The county boundaries were set off in 1840, with land partitioned from Mackinac County. The Cheboygan County government was organized in 1853. Etymology of the name Cheboygan The name of the county shares the same origin as that of the Cheboygan River, although the precise meaning is no longer known. It may have come from an Ojibwe word ''zhaabonigan,'' meaning "sewing needle". Alternatively, the origin may have been ''Chabwegan,'' meaning "a place of ore". The Lower Peninsula of Michigan – also known as Lower Michigan – is the larger, southern and less elevated of the two major landmasses that make up the U.S. state of Michigan; the other being the Upper Peninsula, which is separated by the Straits of Mackinac. It is surrounded by water on all sides except its southern border, which it shares with Indiana and Ohio. Although the Upper Peninsula is commonly referred to as "the U.P.", it is uncommon for the Lower Peninsula to be called "the L.P." Douglas Lake (Cheboygan County, Michigan)
Douglas Lake is an inland lake located in Cheboygan County on the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. It is the 28th largest lake in Michigan with an areal coverage of and a maximum depth of . The Lake has two tributaries, Bessey Creek and Beavertail Creek and one outlet, the East Branch Maple River. Douglas Lake is part of the headwaters for the Maple River, a Blue Ribbon trout stream. Much of the southern shoreline of Douglas Lake is undeveloped as it is owned by the University of Michigan Biological Station and is used for research and educational purposes. Mackinaw State Forest
The Mackinaw State Forest is a forested area owned by the U.S. state of Michigan and operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It is located in the northern area of the Lower Peninsula within the eight counties of Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Montmorency, Otsego, and Presque Isle. The forest is served by Interstate 75, U.S. Highway 23 (US 23), and US 131. Description Most of the Mackinaw State Forest was logged for red pine and white pine during the golden age of Michigan old-growth lumbering, which ended about 1910. Much of the cut-over land was seen as worthless and was allowed to revert to the state of Michigan in lieu of unpaid property taxes.
