Munising Front Range Light
The Munising Front Range Light and its matching Munising Rear Range Light replaced the ineffective Grand Island East Channel Light in 1905. These two lights combine to guide boats from the open waters of Lake Superior down the East Channel next to Grand Island into the harbor of Munising. The history of these lighthouses is documented by Terry Pepper and is not reproduced here. The Front Range Light is located at the western edge of Munising north of M-28. Munising Rear Range Light
The Munising Rear Range Light works with the Munising Front Range Light to project a line of light out into Lake Superior in order to guide boats from the open lake into the safe harbor at Munising, Michigan. This harbor is a natural bay (thus providing protection from easterly or westerly storms) and sheltered on the north by Grand Island. Grand Island however provides a serious navigation hazard, and as boats navigate in the East Channel, there are several dangerous rock ledges that will sink the unwary captain. Grand Island East Channel Light
The Grand Island East Channel Light is a lighthouse located just north of Munising, Michigan and was intended to lead boats from Lake Superior through the channel east of Grand Island into the Munising Harbor. Constructed of wood, the light first opened for service in 1868. The light was very hard to see from Lake Superior, and light maintenance was very difficult so the Munising Range Lights were constructed (Munising Rear Range Light, Munising Front Range Light) and this light was removed from service in 1908 or 1913 (sources vary). The lighthouse was severely neglected, and was in danger of being washed away due to erosion. The Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse Rescue Committee was officially formed. Grand Island Township, Michigan
Grand Island Township is a civil township of Alger County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located along the shores of Lake Superior, the township includes Grand Island, which is designated as the Grand Island National Recreation Area. The township also includes a small portion of the nearby mainland where most of its residents reside along M-28 just north of the city of Munising. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 47, which ranks Grand Island Township as the second-least populated municipality in the state after Pointe Aux Barques Township. M-28 (Michigan Highway)
M-28 is an east–west state trunkline highway that traverses nearly all of the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, from Wakefield to near Sault Ste. Marie in Bruce Township. Along with US Highway 2 (US 2), M-28 forms a pair of primary highways linking the Upper Peninsula from end to end, providing a major access route for traffic from Michigan and Canada along the southern shore of Lake Superior. M-28 is the longest state trunkline in Michigan numbered with the "M-" prefix at .
