Munglinup
Munglinup is a small town located in the Shire of Ravensthorpe in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia. The town lies on the South Coast Highway between Ravensthorpe and Esperance and close to the Munglinup River. The river for most of its course defines the boundary of the Esperance and Ravensthorpe shires. At the Oldfield Estuary, the boundary goes to the eastern shore. The word Munglinup is Noongar in origin and means ''where young people met their in-laws.'' The name first appears on maps made by the Dempster brothers, early settlers of the area in 1868. The region was first opened up for farming in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s, the community asked for a townsite between Esperance and Ravensthorpe to be considered. The townsite was surveyed in 1961 and gazetted in 1962. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. Munglinup River
The Munglinup River is an ephemeral river in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The headwaters of the river rise near Cheadanup Nature Reserve. It flows in a southerly direction through cleared farmland, then crossing the South Coast Highway near the town of Munglinup before discharging into the Oldfield River, of which it is a tributary, approximately from the coast. For most of the length of the river it is within a vegetated corridor, the surrounding land is mostly cleared for stock with only about 15% remnant vegetation remaining. The river only flows in the winter months and the water is naturally saline or brackish. The only tributary to the river is Clayhole Creek. The Shire of Ravensthorpe is a local government area in the southern Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about halfway between the city of Albany and the town of Esperance and about southeast of the state capital, Perth. Oldfield Estuary
Oldfield Estuary is an estuary in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The estuary has a length of and is no wider than with a total area of approximately . The estuary has a main basin area of about and the rest is flood and tidal delta. The Oldfield River and the Munglinup River both discharge into the estuary. Uncleared bushland surrounds the estuary which has high dunes to the east and low sediments to the west. The lagoon is filled with river sediment to the north and beach sand to the south with a long high sandbar that breaks every three to four years. Ravensthorpe, Western Australia
Ravensthorpe is a town 541 km south-east of Perth and 40 km inland from the south coast of Western Australia. It is the seat of government of the Shire of Ravensthorpe. At the , Ravensthorpe had a population of 438. In 1848, the area was surveyed by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe who named many of the geographical features nearby, including the nearby Ravensthorpe Range that the later town was named after. There was one of the Western Australian Government Railways isolated branch lines between Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe. This line opened in 1909. Hopetoun, Western Australia
Hopetoun is a town on the south coast of Western Australia in the Shire of Ravensthorpe. Located on Mary Ann Harbour, Hopetoun is south-east from capital city Perth and west of Esperance. History Mary Ann Harbour was named in November 1865 by the sealer James Sale on the cutter ''Mary Ann''. The ''Mary Ann'' was owned by whaling master John Thomas of Cheyne's Beach, east of Albany, who had named it after his eldest daughter. Hopetoun was established in 1900 as the port servicing the Phillips River goldfield, named after the first Governor-General of Australia, John Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun. The townsite was gazetted on 9 February 1901.
