Muncie SM420 Transmission
The Muncie SM420 is a heavy duty, four-speed manual transmission that was produced from 1947 to 1967 by General Motors for civilian use in a variety of pickup trucks, buses, dump trucks and heavy equipment. They were used in some military vehicles into the 1980s. It was replaced in civilian vehicles by the Muncie SM465 transmission in 1968. Design The transmission has a 7.05:1 ratio first gear, which is one of the lowest "granny" gears ever produced in a production transmission. It weighs 135lb, which is 40 pounds less than the SM465 that replaced it. While the construction is dated by modern standards, these are sought after by off-road enthusiasts due to the ruggedness and gear ratios. Propulsion transmission is the mode of transmitting and controlling propulsion power of a machine. The term ''transmission'' properly refers to the whole drivetrain, including clutch, gearbox, prop shaft (for rear-wheel drive vehicles), differential, and final drive shafts. In the United States the term is sometimes used in casual speech to refer more specifically to the gearbox alone, and detailed usage differs. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, increasing torque in the process. Transmissions are also used on pedal bicycles, fixed machines, and where different rotational speeds and torques are adapted. Often, a transmission has multiple gear ratios (or simply "gears") with the ability to switch between them as the speed varies. Muncie SM465 Transmission
The Saginaw Michigan SM465 is a heavy-duty, four-speed manual transmission built by General Motors for use in light and medium duty trucks from 1968 to 1991 at the factory in Muncie, Indiana; it was designed to replace the somewhat similar Muncie SM420 transmission, which had been in production since just after World War II. The SM465 can be found in Chevrolet and GMC full-size trucks, Blazers, Suburbans, among other models. Some applications beyond one-ton pickup trucks came with larger input shafts. Favored by off-road drivers, the SM465 has a very low first gear suitable for rock-crawling. The SM465 has developed a reputation as a highly durable transmission. For the 1992 model-year, the SM465 was replaced in 3/4- and 1-ton pickup truck applications by the New Venture Gear 4500 transmission. New Venture Gear 4500 Transmission
The New Venture Gear 4500, commonly called NV4500, is a 5-speed manual transmission manufactured by New Venture Gear and used in General Motors and Chrysler products from 1991 to 2007. The NV4500 is a very popular 5-speed manual conversion and upgrade transmission in light trucks and SUVs including Toyota, Ford, Jeep, General Motors, and Dodge. Commercially produced adapters are available to mate this transmission with many different engines and transfer cases. There were many subtle changes during the production of this transmission, but the main two variations were: NV4500LD: Used in GM gas and diesel applications, and Dodge V8 gas applications.
