Chuck Mummert
Elizabethtown (Pennsylvania Dutch: ''Betzischteddel'') is a borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located southeast of Harrisburg, the state capital. Small factories existed at the turn of the 20th century when the population in 1900 was 1,861. As of the 2020 census, the population of the borough was 11,639. Elizabethtown is commonly referred to in south-central Pennsylvania as "E-Town." This nickname is also used for the local college and high school. History There are two stories about the origin of the town's name. In one version it is named after Elizabeth Reeby, wife of Michael Reeby who sold the first building lots here in about 1795. The officially accepted history is that, in 1753, Captain Barnabas Hughes acquired land and laid out a town, naming it for his wife, Elizabeth. The early settlers were primarily Scots-Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch. Elizabethtown became a borough in 1827, and a railroad was built through the area in the 1830s. The t ... Werner Mummert
Werner Mummert (31 March 1897 – 28 January 1950) was a general in the German Wehrmacht during World War II who commanded Panzer Division Müncheberg, Panzer Division ''Müncheberg''. A veteran of World War I, he was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Mummert surrendered to the Soviets in May 1945 and died in a POW Camp, prisoner of war camp five years later. Biography Born in Saxony, Mummert volunteered for the army of Imperial Germany in 1914, upon the outbreak of the First World War. He was commissioned a reserve ''leutnant'' (lieutenant) two years later and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, a Kingdom of Prussia, Prussian decoration. He left the army after the end of the war but in 1936 he joined the ''German Army (Wehrmacht), Heer'' (Army) branch of the Wehrmacht. Initially posted to the 11th Infantry Regiment as a ''leutnant'', Mummert transferred to 10th Cavalry Regiment in 1938 with the rank of ''Rittmeister'' (captai ...
