Multitone Records
Multitone Records, originally Savera Investments, was a British record label founded by Pran Gohil in 1978. Pran was formerly Regional Head of Polygram, Asia Pacific based in the Netherlands and also Executive Chairman of Spartan Records, London. Multitone Records specialized in Bhangra (music), bhangra style music. The style itself was commercialized by Multitone Records, which is considered to be the pioneer of British Bhangra and the label grew to become the "largest Asian record label in the world" during its lifetime under Managing Director Jitesh Gohil. In 1992, the company entered into a joint venture with Bertelsmann Music Group, BMG in order to spread its label throughout Europe and internationally. Multitone's artists formed the "who's who" of the British bhangra scene including The Safri Boyz, DCS, XLNC, Sasha, Amar, Apna Sangeet, Alaap, Chirag Pehchan and many more. Apna Sangeet
Apna Sangeet were a British Asian Bhangra band from Birmingham, England. The group was formed in 1984 by six Birmingham musicians. In contrast to the more western sounds of contemporary groups like DCS, they played a very traditional style of bhangra with a dhol player centre stage. By 1991 they were platinum disc holders, and held the title of UK Asian Pop Award for Best Asian Band. By 1994, the group had released nine albums and sold more than 2,000,000 records, and were awarded Best Bhangra Band by Movie International Magazine. The Stage in 1995 described the group as a "superband...who are virtually unknown to non-Asians". In 2009, the band reunited for one charity show. Chirag Pehchan
Chirag Pehchan was a 1980s Bhangra (music), Bhangra band in the UK, formed by Amarjit Sidhu and Mangal Singh by merging the two Punjabi bhangra groups Chirag and Pehchan, best remembered for the 1987 classic album ''Rail Gaddi'', composed by Kuljit Bhamra. Their song ''Rail Gaddi'' was sung by Mangal Singh and became a popular party piece at the end of Indian weddings, synonymous with ''Do The Conga'', where wedding guests form lines, pretending to be a train, dancing around the wedding hall. ''The Indian Express'' is an English-language Indian daily newspaper founded in 1932 by P. Varadarajulu Naidu. It is headquartered in Noida, owned by the ''Indian Express Group''. It was later taken over by Ramnath Goenka. In 1999, eight years after Goenka's death in 1991, the group was split between the family members. The southern editions took the name '' The New Indian Express'', while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original ''Indian Express'' name with ''The'' prefixed to the title. Sahotas
Sahotas were a U.K. based Bhangra/ Rock/World music band. The band, started in Bilston, Wolverhampton in the mid-1980s, had a line-up of five brothers. They have released music in both English and Punjabi. The lead singer was Surj Sahota, and the music director/producer was Mukhtar Sahota. The band's music is very different from conventional Punjabi music, combining the Bhangra genre with pop, house, reggae and rock, focusing on vocal styles and sounds. This transfusion occurred during the apex of Bhangra Music in the 1980s and 1990s when there was an abundance of Live British Asian Music across the United Kingdom; and when British Asian Music sought to be recognised by the mainstream music industry. DCS are a British Asian live Bhangra band formed in 1983. They are seen as one of the first bands of the UK Bhangra scene along with other bands such as Alaap, Premi, Apna Sangeet, Heera, Shava Shava led by Nirmal Kumar Nirmal and many more.
