Muldoon ( ga, Ó Maoldúin) is an Irish family name. It is represented throughout the world where descendants of emigrants of people bearing that name have settled; e.g. U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other countries. ''Muldoon'' is an anglicisation of the Irish surname ''Ó Maoldúin'', meaning "descendant of the disciple of St. Dúin". It first appears in the ''Lebor na hUidre'' or the ''Book of the Dun Cow''. Another Máel Dúin was one of the Kings from Mag Rath in ''Dál Riata'', a Gaelic 'kingdom' that covered parts of north-eastern Ulster and south-western Scotland (see List of the kings of Dál Riata), Máel Dúin mac Conaill (died c. 689). According to ''The Surnames of Ireland'' by Edward MacLysaght, there are three distinct septs of Muldoon: Galway (around ''Uí Maine''), Clare (whose names were generally Anglicised to Malone), and in Co. Robert Muldoon
Sir Robert David Muldoon (; 25 September 19215 August 1992) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 31st Prime Minister of New Zealand, from 1975 to 1984, while leader of the National Party. Serving as a corporal and sergeant in the army in the Second World War, Muldoon completed his training as an accountant and returned to New Zealand as its first fully qualified cost accountant. He was first elected to the House of Representatives at the 1960 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamaki, representing the National Party. In this time of political stability, Muldoon served successively as Minister of Tourism (1967), Minister of Finance (1967–1972), and Deputy Prime Minister (1972).
