East Jordan, Michigan
East Jordan is a city in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,239 at the 2020 census. The city is at the end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix at the mouth of the Jordan River. The corporate headquarters of EJ, an international company formerly known as East Jordan Iron Works, is located in East Jordan. EJ was founded in East Jordan in 1883. History The area was first settled by Canadian William Empey in 1873. He built the first store here in 1874 at the mouth of the Jordan River at the southernmost point of Lake Charlevoix. He became the first postmaster when a post office opened on May 31, 1878. The community absorbed the nearby village of South Arm and incorporated as the village of East Jordan in 1887. Delton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Barry Township in Barry County, Michigan, United States. The population was 872 at the 2010 census. Geography Delton is located in southwestern Barry County. It is bordered to the north by Hope Township. To the west the CDP extends slightly into Prairieville Township, Cloverdale and Cedar Creek. Dowling is a census-designated place (CDP) in Baltimore Township in Barry County, Michigan, United States. The population was 374 at the 2010 census. History The settlement was informally named "Baltimore" as early as 1842 in memory of the home of prominent settlers. A post office named Baltimore was established in May 1850. The name was changed to Dowling in March 1880. Geography Dowling is located southeast of the center of Barry County. The center of town is located at the intersection of state highway M-37 and East Dowling Road. M-37 leads north to Hastings, the Barry County seat, and south to downtown Battle Creek. Hastings, Michigan
Hastings is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, the county seat of Barry County as well as the county's only city. The population was 7,350 at the 2010 census. The city borders Hastings Charter Township on the north, east, and south, and Rutland Charter Township on the west. History In 1836 three entrepreneurs named Dibble, Kingsbury and Kendall bought along the Thornapple River from Detroit banker Eurotas P. Hastings. Barry County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 62,423. The county seat is Hastings. History Before the present era, the Michigan peninsula was long occupied by bands of the Potowatomi and Ojibwe of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians. Au Gres, Michigan
Au Gres ( ) is a city in Arenac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 945 at the 2020 census. History French explorers named the location Point Au Gres, which stuck on map as late as 1828. Au Gres means "gritty stone" in the area, from which the river and the location takes its name. It was first settled in 1862 temporarily by workers on the Saginaw-Au Sable State Road when they reach the location. The first permanent settler was John Edward Bradley, who built the Bradley House in 1866. On August 8, 1867, the location, which was still a part of Bay County, was granted a post office with Bradley as the first postmaster.
