David Diaz, better known by his stage name Mr. SOS, is an American hip hop artist and producer. Once a member of the Lexington hip hop trio CunninLynguists, he is now a member of the group Mighty High Coup and continues to release solo material under his Mr. SOS moniker. Alternative Hip Hop
Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music that encompasses a wide range of styles that are not typically identified as mainstream. AllMusic defines it as comprising " hip hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk." Alternative hip hop developed in the late 1980s and experienced a degree of mainstream recognition during the early-to-mid 1990s. While some groups such as Arrested Development and The Fugees managed to achieve commercial success before breaking up, many alternative rap acts tend to be embraced by alternative rock listeners other than hip-hop or pop audiences. CunninLynguists
CunninLynguists is an American hip hop group from Lexington, Kentucky. The group currently consists of Deacon the Villain, Kno, and Natti. Early beginnings In 1999, Deacon the Villain and Kno met at Club Kaya in Atlanta, Georgia at an event for the now defunct Blaze Magazine that included various members of Atlanta's own Dungeon Family. They had talked online previously through an emcee named Jugga the Bully, who Deacon invited to an open mic he helped throw called "Underground Live" at the Morehouse College campus, which Deacon attended. At the time, Kno was in the group The Continuum, and Deacon was in the group Illstar. Deacon soon returned to his home state of Kentucky and Kno eventually followed. Following several conversations of working together, the two first planned an EP where Kno was only producing and Deacon was rhyming, but soon Kno contributed as an emcee as well. Mighty High Coup is a Hip Hop Group from Atlanta, GA made up of members SOS (formerly of The CunninLynguists), Ricky Raw, and Amir "A Bomb" Herron. The group is known throughout Atlanta's Hip Hop scene for their performances and for their members involvement in the Atlanta music scene. They launched both ''//404 Day//'' and ''//808 Fest//'', mostly coordinated by member Ricky Raw in an effort to unite and showcase all local artists who create or perform bass heavy Hip Hop or EDM. Lorin Gabriel Ashton, better known under his stage name Bassnectar (born February 16, 1978), is an American DJ and record producer. Biography Ashton grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Bellarmine College Preparatory. He initially identified with visual arts rather than music, creating movies with his dad's camera at the age of ten. When he was 16 years old, he played in a death metal band named Pale Existence, which contributed to his heavy style of music. In the following years, he became increasingly more involved in the scene, promoting shows, distributing food and assistance to concertgoers, buying records and eventually learning to DJ after studying electronic music production. ''SouthernUnderground'' is the second album from American rap trio CunninLynguists, released in 2003. As well as resident vocalist Deacon the Villain and DJ/vocalist Kno, the group employed Mr. SOS to accompany on vocals for much of the album. In addition to these three, other artists from the QN5 record label appear, including Tonedeff. It is best known for its single "Seasons", featuring Masta Ace, that details that history of hip hop comparing different eras to seasons of a year. It also has some political songs, such as "Dying Nation," "War," and "Appreciation," which takes a somber, storytelling approach to the September 11th attacks. '' Illtown'' is a 1998 film directed by Nick Gomez. It was the first screen appearance of Oscar Isaac. Plot Dante and his girlfriend Micky run a very profitable drug operation in a seaside town, aided and abetted by a host of teens who sell the smack at discos around town, as well as by Lucas, a corrupt cop who's on the take. Their downfall comes when they suspect one of the boys, Pepi, of ripping them off, and his accidental death causes disloyalty among the teens, who suspect Dante killed Pepi. All of this is perfect for the return of Gabriel, a one-time partner of Dante, who has just been released from jail, and has an almost angelic demeanor and the certainty that he can fix everyone's lives.
