Mr. Piper
''Mr. Piper'' is a 1963 Canadian children's TV series. The series was created by Martin Andrews and Allan Wargon, who was also the producer. 39 episodes were produced. Overview The show's host was a large Canadian opera tenor Alan Crofoot, dressed as a Pied Piper with a flower in his hat. He would introduce four segments in each half-hour programme: *''Teletune'' - as a narrator of limited animation cartoons of fantasy stories *''Port of Call'' - presenter of films about children and events in other lands; *''Bag of Tricks'' - Crofoot performs magic tricks; *''Animal Farm'' - many farmyard characters telling the story of the day in miniature barnyard sets, featuring Rupert the Rat, Bessie the Bunny, Kookie the Kitten, Harriet Hen, Freddie Frog, Calvin (Rac)Coon and Charlotte Cow. Alan Crofoot
Alan Crofoot (June 2, 1929 – March 5, 1979) was a Canadian operatic Heldentenor, character tenor specialist, and actor. He was also the host of '' Mr. Piper'', a 1960s children's television series that aired on the CBC in Canada. Career Crofoot was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He attended the University of Toronto where he earned a Master's degree in psychology. His operatic career began at the Canadian Opera, as Spoletta in ''Tosca'', in 1956. Crofoot also appeared in stage productions of musicals such as '' Man of La Mancha'', in London's West End, and '' Oliver!'' on Broadway and Winnipeg's Rainbow Stage. From 1963 to 1964, Crofoot hosted the CBC children's program ''Mr. Piper'', which also became well known in the United Kingdom. Crofoot hosted the show dressed as a Pied Piper, with a flower in his hat. He is the off-screen narrator with non-CG animation through the window. The Pied Piper of Hamelin (german: der Rattenfänger von Hameln, also known as the Pan Piper or the Rat-Catcher of Hamelin) is the title character of a legend from the town of Hamelin (Hameln), Lower Saxony, Germany. The legend dates back to the Middle Ages, the earliest references describing a piper, dressed in multicolored ("pied") clothing, who was a rat catcher hired by the town to lure rats away with his magic pipe. When the citizens refuse to pay for this service as promised, he retaliates by using his instrument's magical power on their children, leading them away as he had the rats. This version of the story spread as folklore and has appeared in the writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, and Robert Browning, among others.
