Moyamensing
Moyamensing is an area of Philadelphia established as a Moyamensing Township during British colonial rule on the fast land of the Neck, lying between Passyunk Square, Philadelphia, Passyunk and Wicaco. It was Act of Consolidation, 1854, incorporated into Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and today encompasses several neighborhoods along the Moyamensing Avenue corridor in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. History Originally Lenape Nation land, the tract was granted by the Dutch West India Company Lieutenant Alexander d'Hinoyossa, Vice-Director of Fort Casimir, New Amstel to Marten Roseman (aka Marten Cleinsmit), William Stille and Lawrence Andries. Moyamensing Prison
Moyamensing Prison was a prison in Philadelphia, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It was designed by Thomas Ustick Walter. Its cornerstone was laid April 2, 1832; it opened on October 19, 1835, was in use until 1963, and was demolished in 1968. For nearly 140 years the Moyamensing Prison dominated the southwest at the intersection of Passyunk Avenue and Reed Street in South Philadelphia. History In 1831, the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania authorized the erection of a facility to be called the prison of the city and county of Philadelphia. In published reports of the Board of Inspectors it was listed as the Philadelphia County Prison, but was generally referred to by its location, which was about a mile south of the line of the city proper, in what was then Moyamensing, Philadelphia, Moyamensing Township, as the Moyamensing Prison, and as the New County Prison in some architectural plans. Act Of Consolidation, 1854
The Act of Consolidation, more formally known as the act of February 2, 1854 (P.L. 21, No. 16), is legislation of the Pennsylvania General Assembly that created the consolidated City and County of Philadelphia, expanding the city's territory to the entirety of Philadelphia County and dissolving the other municipal authorities in the county. The law was enacted by the General Assembly and approved February 2, 1854, by Governor William Bigler. This act consolidated all remaining townships, districts, and boroughs within the County of Philadelphia, dissolving their governmental structures and bringing all municipal authority within the county under the auspices of the Philadelphia government. Additionally, any unincorporated areas were included in the consolidation. The consolidation was drafted to help combat lawlessness that the many local governments could not handle separately and to bring in much-needed tax revenue for the State. Southwark was originally the Southwark District, a colonial-era municipality in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
