Mountain View Cemetery (Fresno)
Mountain View Cemetery is a cemetery in Fresno, California, opened in the 1880s. History In the early 1880s, Moses J. Church donated 80 acres of land along Belmont Avenue for the establishment of cemeteries. He named the combined plot Mountain View Cemetery but subdivided it and allocated it to a number of groups, such as Catholic, Seventh-Day Adventist, Episcopal, Christian, Masonic, Odd Fellows and many others. No fences were installed between the areas. John S. Eastwood performed the initial survey the property in 1888 as Fresno's City Engineer at the time. The 10-acres of donated land earmarked for the Armenian community became Ararat Cemetery. Upkeep for the cemetery was assigned to the local Odd Fellows lodge. In 1910, citizens became concerned with plant overgrowth and lack of a map showing ownership of individual plots at the cemetery. The Meux Home is a historic mansion located in Fresno, California. It was the residence of Thomas Richard Meux, a physician who served Fresno in the initial stages of the city's growth. History Meux family background Thomas Richard Meux was born on August 6, 1838, near Stanton, Tennessee. He received a degree from the University of Virginia then continued his education the University of Pennsylvania, studying medicine. After graduating in 1860, he moved back to Tennessee and started a medical practice. Along with his brother, John, Thomas Meux enlisted in the 9th Tennessee Infantry Regiment on May 24, 1861, just as the American Civil War was breaking out. Frank Dusy
Frank Dusy (December 17, 1837 – November 9, 1898) was an early business leader of Selma, California and a co-inventor of the Fresno Scraper, the basis of most modern earth-moving machinery. On June 16, 1885, Dusy and his partner Abijah McCall were issued U.S. Patent 320,055, for their improvement on the Buck Scraper, invented by James Porteous of Fresno, California. Porteous, originally a wagon builder, purchased their patent and one held by William Deidrick as he perfected his machine. Fulton Mall (Fresno)
The Fulton Mall was a six-block corridor in downtown Fresno, California which was closed to traffic in 1964 and made into a pedestrians only mall. Despite opening to much fanfare, the downtown mall suffered from the city's suburban expansion, especially the opening of the Fashion Fair Mall six miles to the north. By the 1980s, most storefronts on the mall were empty and plans to renovate the mall were discussed. In 2017, car traffic was reintroduced to the street after most the public art and amenities had been relocated to sidewalk areas. The mall was an early example of the design intent and masterplan-oriented thought process of shopping mall pioneer Victor Gruen, whose ideas were emulated, albeit in a modified form, across the United States. Alma Rubens
Alma Rubens (born Alma Genevieve Reubens; February 19, 1897 – January 21, 1931) was an American film actress and stage performer. Rubens began her career in the mid 1910s. She quickly rose to stardom in 1916 after appearing opposite Douglas Fairbanks in ''The Half-Breed''. For the remainder of the decade, she appeared in supporting roles in comedies and drama. In the 1920s, Rubens developed a drug addiction which eventually ended her career. She died of lobar pneumonia and bronchitis shortly after being arrested for cocaine possession in January 1931.
