Mountain Leader Award
The Mountain Leader Award (ML) is a qualification for those who want to lead groups hillwalking, map reading and navigating in the Highland (geography), uplands, mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The awarding body is Mountain Training (MT), the co-ordinating body for mountain training schemes in the UK, To gain the qualification the candidate must log a minimum of 20 days experience, undertake a Training Course, gain a further minimum of 40 days logged experience and then pass an Assessment Course. The Mountain Leader Award does not cover winter conditions for which there is a further qualification – Winter Mountain Leader. Those who wish to lead groups in the mountains abroad in countries which require a formal qualification usually need to have completed the International Mountain Leader Award (IML) and be a member of a professional association. Walking is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the United Kingdom, and within England and Wales there is a comprehensive network of rights of way that permits access to the countryside. Highlands or uplands are areas of high elevation such as a mountainous region, elevated mountainous plateau or high hills. Generally speaking, upland (or uplands) refers to ranges of hills, typically from up to while highland (or highlands) is usually reserved for ranges of low mountains. Moorland
Moorland or moor is a type of habitat found in upland areas in temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands and montane grasslands and shrublands biomes, characterised by low-growing vegetation on acidic soils. Moorland, nowadays, generally means uncultivated hill land (such as Dartmoor in South West England), but also includes low-lying wetlands (such as Sedgemoor, also South West England). It is closely related to heath, although experts disagree on what precisely distinguishes these types of vegetation. UIMLA
The Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA) was founded in November 2004. It was decided at the meeting that all mountain leader associations would be awarded the same carnet and badge giving an internationally recognised identity. It also paves the way for other countries from around the world to join UIMLA setting a world standard for mountain leaders. The principal aims of UIMLA are: * To promote the profession of International Mountain Leader (IML) and to reinforce its identity beyond Europe; * To develop relationships between the professionals of various nationalities and to take part in the evolution of the IML training and qualifications; * To represent the profession at a European and international level.
