Mountain Baronets
The Mountain Baronetcy, of Oare Manor in the County of Somerset and Brendon in the County of Devon, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 January 1922 for Edward Mountain. He was Chairman of Eagle Star & British Dominions Insurance Company Limited (which later became Eagle Star Insurance Company Ltd). The second Baronet (Sir Brian Mountain Bt.) succeeded Sir Edward as Chairman of Eagle Star Insurance Company Ltd. The third Baronet also became Chairman of Eagle Star Insurance Company Ltd. Baronetage Of The United Kingdom
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) James I of England, King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of Pound sterling, £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. The Baronetage of England comprises all baronetcies created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union 1707, Act of Union in 1707. Sir Edward Mountain, 1st Baronet
Sir Edward Mortimer Mountain, 1st Baronet (1872–1948) was the founder of Eagle Star Insurance which became one of the largest insurance companies in the United Kingdom. Career Educated at Dulwich College, Edward Mountain initially joined a Lloyd's underwriting firm. He later established his own broking firm, ''Hawley Mountain'', which, following a merger, became ''Gardner Mountain''. In 1904 he acquired the marine insurance business of ''British Dominions Insurance'' and formed ''British Dominions Marine Insurance Company''. He then established a reputation for himself by refusing to insure the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage. During 1916 and 1917 he acquired, in quick succession, the ''Eagle'', ''Sceptre'' and ''Star'' Insurance Companies integrating them with his own business to create Eagle & British Dominions, which grew to become one of the largest insurance companies in the United Kingdom. Sir Edward Mountain, 4th Baronet
Sir Edward Brian Stanford Mountain, 4th Baronet of Oare Manor and Brendon (Somerset) (born 19 March 1961) is a Scottish Conservative politician who has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Highlands and Islands region since 2016. Early life Mountain joined the Blues and Royals regiment of the British Army from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in October 1981. His military service took him to Uganda, Canada, Spain, Cyprus, Germany and Egypt. He left in 1992 and continued to serve as a reservist for six years. In 1997, Mountain left the army and became a qualified chartered surveyor. He worked as a senior partner for a firm based in Inverness in 2006. The following year he returned to farming. The Mountains own estates in Hampshire and in Strathspey. In the 2011 Scottish Parliament election, Mountain stood in the Caithness, Sutherland and Ross constituency where he finished fourth.
