Mount Wati
Mount Wati is one of the highest mountains in West Nile. It is located in Terego District, near the border with Maracha. The peak of Mount Wati also known as Eti is referred to as Ortega Peak. This followed a 28 February 2024 group hike. The Ranges next to it include the Offude Hills. Rebels used to hide there and monitor advancing government soldiers. It is also reported to harbour big snakes that use lights for trapping prey at night. Its elevation is approximately 1250 meters above sea level. Mythology surrounding Wati Dribidu, the ancestor of all Lugbara people is believed, according to myths, to have settled there after being excommunicated from east of the Albert Nile. He saw smoke rising from near the mountain and on approaching the source found a woman cooking. He made her his wife, hence the Lugbara tribe started from Wati. Terego District
Terego is a district in Uganda's Northern Region. It is located approximately northwest of Uganda's capital Kampala. The administrative centre of the district is the trading centre of Leju in Aii-Vu Sub-County. Terego District covers an area of and the areas now making up the district recorded a non-refugee population of 199,303 in the 2014 Ugandan census. Terego District also hosts an estimated 168,000 refugees, mostly from South Sudan, in the Imvepi Refugee Settlement and the western zones of the Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement in the district. Maracha District
Maracha District is a district in the West Nile sub-region, in the Northern Region of Uganda. It was formed in 2006 from Arua District. History Initially, the counties of Maracha and Terego were removed from Arua District to form a new, single district, which was also known as Maracha–Terego District or Nyadri District. From the district's inception, where to locate its headquarters had been a contentious issue. In February 2007, one group of elected officials from the district asked a court to block the location of the new district headquarters in an opposing location. After nearly five years of disagreement, Terego County opted to return to Arua District and Maracha County went on to form the new district on its own. Lugbara People
The Lugbara are a Central Sudanic ethnic group who live mainly in the West Nile region of Uganda, in the adjoining area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and few in South Sudan. They speak the Lugbara language, a Central Sudanic language similar to the language spoken by the Madi, with whom they also share many cultural similarities. Traditions and culture Traditionally, the Lugbara are farmers who rear some livestock and poultry, mainly Guineafowl locally known as 'ope'. They are the predominant keepers of guinea fowl in Uganda. Lugbara occupy the West Nile region of Uganda and Arua, Arua City, Maracha, Terego, Madi-Okollo, Yumbe and Koboko districts of Uganda to be specific. Arua
Arua is a city and commercial centre within the Arua District in the Northern Region of Uganda. Arua District
Arua District is a district in the Northern Region of Uganda. Like many other Ugandan districts, it shares its name with its administrative center of Arua. The name Arua is said to be derived from the Lugbara name for prison (Arujo) and prisoner (Aru), since the white settlers (Belgians and later British) had a detention center at Arua Hill.
