The volcano was used as a beacon due by ships, due to the red crater glow. It last erupted in 1935. John Moresby
Rear Admiral John Moresby (15 March 1830 – 12 July 1922) was a British naval officer who explored the coast of New Guinea and was the first European to discover the site of Port Moresby. Life and career Moresby was born in Allerford, Somerset, England, the son of Eliza Louisa and Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby. He joined the navy at an early age as a Volunteer 1st Class in HMS ''Victor'', and rose to be in charge of the 1,031 ton paddle steamer cruiser HMS ''Basilisk'' in which he made hydrological surveys around eastern New Guinea. During the survey of the southern coast he discovered the harbour which he named Fairfax after his father. The town established there, based on already existing native villages (principally Hanuabada) was named Port Moresby and is now the nation's capital. John Moresby was also searching for a shorter route between Australia and China and on the eastern tip of the island he discovered the China Strait. He continued exploring along the no ... Hydrographers Range
The Hydrographers Range is a forested mountain range in the Oro Province of southeastern Papua New Guinea. It extends from the eastern margin of Mount Lamington in the west to the Pacific Ocean coast in the east. This coastal range represents a deeply dissected stratovolcano formed during the Quaternary period. It consists mainly of andesite and basaltic andesite but basalt and dacite are also present. Much of this volcanic massif formed during the Pleistocene epoch, but late-stage volcanism produced well-preserved cinder cones and explosion craters on the southern side of the range presumably during the Holocene epoch. Mount Lamington
Mount Lamington is an andesitic stratovolcano in the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea. The forested peak of the volcano had not been recognised as such until its devastating eruption in 1951 that caused about 3,000 deaths. The volcano rises to 1680 meters above the coastal plain north of the Owen Stanley Range. A summit complex of lava domes and crater remnants rises above a low-angle base of volcaniclastic deposits that are dissected by radial valleys. A prominent broad "avalanche valley" extends northward from the breached crater. The mountain was named after Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington who was Governor of Queensland. 1951 eruption Mount Lamington began to erupt on the night of January 18, 1951. Three days later there was a violent eruption when a large part of the northern side of the mountain was blown away and devastating pyroclastic flows poured from the gap for a considerable time afterwards. The area of extreme damage extended over a radius ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Mount Trafalgar
Mount Trafalgar is an extinct volcano on the north east coast of Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. The mountain is a major andesite volcano, with the magma known for its high levels of Nickel and Chromium. Captain John Moresby named the mountain after the naval battle of Trafalgar. Hydrographers Range, Mount Lamington, and Mount Victory are three other large Quaternary stratovolcanoes in south-eastern New Guinea. Name Mount Trafalgar is named after the famous naval battle of Trafalgar, which was fought off the coast of Spain in 1805 between the British Royal Navy and the combined fleets of France and Spain. Victory (volcano)
Victory is a volcano on New Guinea island, Papua New Guinea. It is situated on Cape Nelson, 30 km from Tufi in an area with no Wadati-Benioff zone. It is one of four large stratovolcanos in Northern New Guinea island, the others being Hydrographers Range, Trafalgar and Lamington. Morphology Victory is dominantly Andesitic in origin, but also has traces of Basalt and Dacite, the lavas erupted have an unusually high level of Chromium and Nickel. The volcano is densely forested in all but the summit crater. On the sides of the volcano (near the summit) are four lava domes, two on the SW flank and two on the NE flank. The summit crater is breached to the SE and was probably created by a landslide. The summit now contains a small crater lake where weak thermal activity continues. Eruptions A small eruption may have occurred in 1810 (give or take 10 years), but this event is uncertain. The only known eruption from Victory was a long-term eruption that lasted from the late 1 ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
