Mount Vernon is a city in Jefferson County, Illinois, United States, and its county seat. The population was 14,600 at the 2020 census. Mount Vernon is the principal city of the Mount Vernon, Illinois micropolitan area, which includes all of Jefferson and Hamilton counties. History 19th century Mt. Vernon was founded in 1817 by Zadok Casey, who was elected to the State Senate in 1822 and was elected lieutenant governor in 1833. He served in the U.S. Congress between 1833 and 1843. The town was named for George Washington's plantation, Mount Vernon, which was named for Edward Vernon, a British naval hero. When the town was founded, there was no road to it. Travelers had to get there by either following the high ground from the north or crossing the swamps from the south. 5th District Appellate Court
The 5th District Appellate Court is located in Mount Vernon, Illinois, an incorporated town in Jefferson County. The building was originally constructed for the southern division of the Illinois Supreme Court, which was created by the 1848 Illinois constitution. Construction on the Greek Revival building began in 1854. Illinois' 1870 constitution established appellate courts, and this building then shared space with the fourth district until 1897 when all supreme court sessions moved to Springfield. The building presently houses the 5th District Appellate Court. It runs from near the town center of Equality at Calhoun Street, a local road, north to Illinois Route 37 and the northern terminus of Illinois Route 148 in Mount Vernon. This is a distance of . Walnut Hill, Illinois
Walnut Hill is a village in Marion County, Illinois, United States. The population was 95 at the 2020 census. History Walnut Hill was once the intersection of two of the main roads in Illinois: the George Rogers Clark Trace and the Yadda Road. The original capital of Illinois was at Kaskaskia, southwest of present-day Walnut Hill. The overland route from Kaskaskia to the interior of the state followed the Kaskaskia/ Big Muddy River divide, which went through Walnut Hill. George Rogers Clark marched through Walnut Hill in February 1779 on his march from Fort Kaskaskia to Fort Vincennes, which resulted in the conquest of Illinois by the army of Virginia. Dix is a village in Jefferson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 469 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Mount Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Dix is located in northern Jefferson County at (38.440676, -88.942463). Illinois Route 37 is the village's Main Street, leading south to Mount Vernon, the county seat, and north to Salem. Interstate 57 passes through the western side of the village, with access from Exit 103. I-57 leads south to Interstate 64 at Mount Vernon and north to Interstate 70 at Effingham. Opdyke, Illinois
Opdyke is a census-designated place in the southeastern part of Jefferson County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 236. History Opdyke was laid out in 1871, following construction of the St. Louis & Southeastern Railroad. The nearby, earlier town of Lynchburg was largely abandoned and moved to Opdyke. A part of the railroad investment in this area was funded by a mortgage of $4,525,000 by Calhoun & Opdyke of New York. The town is named for Opdyke. It is possible that the name of the village is all that they got out of the investment. The original surveys of Illinois, made around 1800, show the Goshen Road passing through what is now the center of Opdyke in a north–south direction. The road was about a quarter mile east of the north–south section road that now forms the western boundary of the village. The Big Muddy River is a river in southern Illinois. It joins the Mississippi River just south of Grand Tower. The Big Muddy has been dammed near Benton, forming Rend Lake. The Big Muddy has a mud bottom for most of its length. Hydrography The Big Muddy drains a watershed. In 1995, water quality was assessed as "fair" to "good". Pollution sources include agricultural practices, mining and municipalities. The watershed of the Big Muddy was covered by the Illinoian Glacier about 300,000 to 132,000 years before present. The Big Muddy basin formed after the retreat of that glacier. The Big Muddy was not covered by the Wisconsin Glacier, about 70,000 to 10,000 years before present. Goshen Settlement
The Goshen Settlement was an early American pioneer settlement in what is now Illinois, United States, located to the east of St. Louis, Missouri. The settlement was located about one mile (1.6 km) southwest of modern Glen Carbon, Illinois, at the point where Judy's Creek emerges from the bluffs into the American Bottoms, on its way to the Mississippi River. In 1799, David Bagley, a Virginia Baptist minister passed through the area and determined that it was a land of such expanse and luxuriant vegetation that he compared it to the Biblical Land of Goshen. References to this Land of Goshen have persisted since that time. In 1801, Col. Samuel Judy received a military grant of near the base of the bluffs, just north of Judy's Creek, and became the first permanent American settler of Madison County. Old Shawneetown is a village in Shawnee Township, Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 113, down from 193 at the 2010 census. Located along the Ohio River, Shawneetown served as an important United States government administrative center for the Northwest Territory. Goshen Road
Goshen Road was an early road that ran from Old Shawneetown, Illinois, on the Ohio River, northwest to the Goshen Settlement, near Glen Carbon, Illinois, near the Mississippi River. In the early 19th century, this was the main east/west road in Illinois. History Goshen Road started as a natural, or pioneer, trace: a route that was used by Native Americans and migrating animals. The road was not a definite, marked out path. It was, rather, a collection of vague, parallel paths that crossed, shifting with the season and over the years. Eventually the demand for salt solidified the road's importance. Edward Vernon
Admiral Edward Vernon (12 November 1684 – 30 October 1757) was a Royal Navy officer and politician. He had a long and distinguished career, rising to the rank of admiral after 46 years service. As a vice admiral during the War of Jenkins' Ear, in 1739 he was responsible for the capture of Portobelo, Panama, seen as expunging the failure of Admiral Hosier there in a previous conflict. However, his amphibious operation against the Spanish port of Cartagena de Indias was a disastrous defeat. Vernon also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) on three occasions and was outspoken on naval matters in Parliament, making him a controversial figure. The origin of the name " grog" for rum diluted with water is attributed to Vernon.
