Mount Thomas (Alaska)
Mount Thomas is a mountain summit located in the Chugach Mountains, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The peak is situated west-southwest of Valdez, Alaska, on the boundary of Chugach National Forest. Although modest in elevation, Topographic relief, relief is significant since the eastern aspect of the mountain rises up from the tidewater of Prince William Sound's Valdez Narrows in approximately 1.5 miles. The mountain was named in 1898 by Captain William R. Abercrombie, presumably for General George Henry Thomas (1816–1870). Climate Based on the Köppen climate classification, Mount Thomas is located in a subarctic climate zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and mild summers. Weather systems coming off the Gulf of Alaska are forced upwards by the Chugach Mountains (orographic lift), causing heavy precipitation in the form of rainfall and snowfall. Chugach Mountains
The Chugach Mountains of southern Alaska are the northernmost of the several mountain ranges that make up the Pacific Coast Ranges of the western edge of North America. The range is about long and wide, and extends from the Knik and Turnagain Arms of the Cook Inlet on the west to Bering Glacier, Tana Glacier, and the Tana River on the east. It is bounded on the north by the Matanuska, Copper, and Chitina rivers. The highest point of the Chugach Mountains is Mount Marcus Baker, at , but with an average elevation of , most of its summits are not especially high.
