Mount Meharry
Mount Meharry is the highest mountain in Western Australia. It is located in the Hamersley Range within the southeastern part of Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region, approximately south-southeast of Wittenoom, and east-southeast of Tom Price. The Pandjima peoples are the traditional owners of the area. The indigenous name for Mount Meharry is Wirlbiwirlbi. History Mount Meharry is named after William Thomas Meharry (1912–1967), Chief Geodetic Surveyor for Western Australia from 1959 to 1967. It was discovered by Surveyor Trevor Markey and his party in 1967. Tom Meharry directed the survey party and performed the calculations that confirmed the mountain was the highest peak in Western Australia, being higher than Mount Bruce which lies 62 km northwest of Mount Meharry. Department Of Environment And Conservation (Western Australia)
The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) was a department of the Government of Western Australia that was responsible for implementing the state's conservation and environment legislation and regulations. It was formed on 1 July 2006 by the amalgamation of the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management. Juna Downs
Juna Downs Station, often referred to as Juna, is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station. It is located about east of Tom Price and north west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The station's western boundary abuts Karijini National Park, and access to Western Australia's highest point, Mount Meharry, is through the boundaries of the station. The mining company Hamersley Iron, a part of Rio Tinto, currently owns Juna. Rio Tinto owns another five stations in the Pilbara, including Yarraloola, Hamersley and Rocklea. Collectively the properties run a herd of approximately 24,000 cattle. The Panyjima people are the traditional owners of the area in which Juna Downs is located. Great Northern Highway
Great Northern Highway is an Australian highway that links Western Australia's capital city Perth with its northernmost port, Wyndham. With a length of almost , it is the longest highway in Australia, with the majority included as part of the Perth Darwin National Highway. The highway is constructed as a sealed, predominantly two-lane single carriageway, but with some single-lane bridges in the Kimberley. Geoff Gallop
Geoffrey Ian Gallop (born 27 September 1951) is an Australian academic and former politician who served as the 27th Premier of Western Australia from 2001 to 2006. He is currently a professor and director of the Graduate School of Government at the University of Sydney and former chairman of the Australian Republican Movement. The premier of Western Australia is the head of government of the state of Western Australia. Stewart Bovell
Sir William Stewart Bovell (19 December 1906 – 15 September 1999) was an Australian politician who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the electorates of Sussex and Vasse between 1947 and 1971. Panyjima Language
Panyjima is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken in the Hamersley Range, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is the traditional language of the Panyjima people. The name has also been spelled Bandjima, Banjima, Banyjima, Paanjima, Pandjima, Panjima, Panjtjima, and Panytyima. Like most indigenous Australian languages, Panyjima is endangered.
