The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. Bigla Ridge ( bg, text=хребет Бигла, italic=yes, ‘Hrebet Bigla’ \'hre-bet 'bi-gla\) is the rocky, partly ice-free ridge extending 19 km in northwest-southeast direction, 8.8 km wide and rising to 1644 m ( Stancheva Peak) on Foyn Coast, Antarctic Peninsula. Roumiana Panayotova Metcheva (Bulgarian: Румяна Панайотова Мечева) is a Bulgarian Antarctic researcher, best known for her work on ecotoxicology and biodiversity protection in the Antarctic. She is the Head of Department of Ecosystem Research, Environmental Risk Assessment and Conservation Biology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Mount Mecheva was named after Metcheva for recognition of her work. Early life and education Metcheva was born on July 13, 1950, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
