Mount Igikpak
__NOTOC__ Mount Igikpak ( Iñupiaq: ''Iġġiqpak'') is the highest peak in the Schwatka Mountains region of the Brooks Range. It is also the tallest mountain in Gates of the Arctic National Park, located in the US state of Alaska. Some sources list the height of its summit at 8,510'. Mount Igikpak is in the south central part of the national park, very close to the source of the Noatak River and not far from the Arrigetch Peaks. Its name comes from the Iñupiaq word ''Iġġiqpak'', meaning 'big mountain'. Climbing History The first ascent of Mount Igikpak was completed August 9, 1968 by David Roberts, Chuck Loucks, and Al De Maria. Brooks Range
The Brooks Range ( Gwich'in: ''Gwazhał'') is a mountain range in far northern North America stretching some from west to east across northern Alaska into Canada's Yukon Territory. Reaching a peak elevation of on Mount Isto, the range is believed to be approximately 126 million years old. In the United States, these mountains are considered a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, whereas in Canada they are considered separate, as the northern border of the Rocky Mountains is considered to be the Liard River far to the south in the province of British Columbia. While the range is mostly uninhabited, the Dalton Highway and Trans-Alaska Pipeline System run through the Atigun Pass (1,415 m, 4,643 ft) on their way to the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope. Arrigetch Peaks
The Arrigetch Peaks (Iñupiaq language, Iñupiaq: ''Argaich'') are a cluster of rugged granite spires in the Endicott Mountains of the central Brooks Range in northern Alaska. The name ''Arrigetch'' means 'fingers of the outstretched hand' in the Inupiat language, Inupiat language. The peaks ring the glacial cirques at the head of the Kobuk River and 2 tributaries of the Alatna River: Arrigetch Creek and Aiyagomahala Creek (Creek 4662). They are located at latitude 67 degrees 24' N and longitude 154 degrees 10' W. All of the summits of the peaks are around 6,000 ft, 1825 m elevation. The Arrigetch Peaks area was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968 for its spectacular geography. The earliest recorded Geological Survey of the area was in 1911 by Philip Sidney Smith, Philip S. Smith and H.M. Eakin. Noatak River
The Noatak River ( ik, Nuataam Kuuŋa) is a river in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Alaska. Description The Noatak River's headwaters are on the north flank of Mount Igikpak in the Schwatka Mountains of the Brooks Range in the Gates of the Arctic National Park. The Noatak flows generally westward for about to the Chukchi Sea at Kotzebue Sound. The river's entire course is north of the Arctic Circle. Leaving Gates of the Arctic National Park the river enters the Noatak National Preserve which exactly delineates the river's watershed.
