Mount Helena, Western Australia
Mount Helena is an suburb on the outskirts of Perth, in Western Australia, 35 km from the city, in the Shire of Mundaring. Its population in 2016 was 3,185 people. History Mount Helena was originally known as White's Mill, a reference to Abraham White who, with Edward Vivien Harvey Keane and James Wright, in 1882 built a saw mill to supply sleepers for the construction of the Eastern Railway from Guildford to Chidlows Well. From 1898 the area was known as Lion Mill until it was renamed Mount Helena in 1924. The chief instigator in the hunt for a new name was the local Progress Association whose first choice, "Hillcrest", had been rejected by the authorities because of a duplication in New South Wales. The next suggestion, "Mount Helena", was more successful, indicative of the terrain and because the suburb was situated centrally in the Helena River district. James William Wright
James William Wright (9 October 1854 – 3 October 1917) was an Australian architect, civil engineer, and politician. He established the first private architectural practice in Western Australia in 1884, which now operates as Cameron Chisholm Nicol. Wright also served in the state's Legislative Council from 1902 to 1908, representing Metropolitan Province. Mount Helena Tavern
The Mount Helena Tavern was opened in 1902 in Mount Helena, a hills suburb of Perth, Western Australia. It was originally called the ''Lion Mill Hotel'', then the ''Mount Helena Hotel'', before acquiring its current name. Locally it is referred to as ''The Mounties''. History In 1882 Mount Helena began as White's Mill. The timber mill was established to provide sleepers for the Eastern Railway that linked Guildford to Chidlow's Well. White's Mill closed in 1888 and was replaced by Lion Mill. Due to logging and the junction of two railway lines, Ernest Forsyth built and licensed a hotel. The original weatherboard Lion Mill Hotel was built by local carpenters and completed in September 1902. The land and finance for the hotel came from local timber mill owner Richard Hummerston. Railway Reserve Heritage Trail
The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail also on some maps as ''Rail Reserve Heritage Trail'' or ''Rail Reserves Historical Trail'', and frequently referred to locally as the ''Bridle Trail'' or ''Bridle Track'' is within the Shire of Mundaring in Western Australia. Names and sections The trail comprises a loop between Bellevue and Mount Helena, and a line from Mount Helena to Wooroloo. The loop, called ''Trail Loop'', is in length, and follows the two Eastern Railway routes travelling east from Bellevue and meeting up again in Mount Helena, thus forming a loop. Eastern Hills Senior High School
Eastern Hills Senior High School is an Independent Public secondary school in Mount Helena, in the Perth Hills, east of Perth, Western Australia. It serves approximately 950 students from year 7 to year 12. Overview The school was opened originally in 1892 as Lion Mill School. In 1954, it became Mount Helena Junior High School, serving both primary students and secondary students from years eight to ten. The original school consists of single storey, linear brick buildings with a clay tile roof. It is built in a non-specific architectural style, although it borrows elements from the California bungalow style and the Post War International Style. Helena River
The Helena River is a tributary of the Swan River in Western Australia. The river rises in country east of Mount Dale and flows north-west to Mundaring Weir, where it is dammed. It then flows west until it reaches the Darling Scarp. It passes through the western edge of the Darling Scarp between Gooseberry Hill, and Greenmount Hill before joining the Swan River at the southern edge of the historic town, now suburb, of Guildford. Catchment area Many of the tributaries of the Helena River are unnamed due to their seasonality and size. Eastern Railway (Western Australia)
The Eastern Railway is the main railway route between Fremantle and Northam in Western Australia. It opened in stages between 1881 and 1893. The line continues east to Kalgoorlie as the Eastern Goldfields Railway. Initial section The first sod of the Fremantle-Guildford Railway was turned by Governor Ord at Guildford on 3 June 1879. The event coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of settlement of Western Australia. Edward Vivian Harvey Keane (8 August 1844 – 9 July 1904) was an Australian engineer, businessman, and politician. Born in Birkenhead, England, he was educated at Christ's Hospital, and emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in 1876. Keane then moved to South Australia, where he worked as a railway engineer. He later moved to Western Australia, where he served in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. Early life Keane was born on 8 August 1844 in Birkenhead, Cheshire.
