Mount Hay, New South Wales
Mount Hay, a mountain that is part of the Mt Hay Range of the Blue Mountains Range which is a spur off the Great Dividing Range, is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately west of Sydney and north of the nearest town, Wentworth Falls. Mount Hay is approximately AMSL and is one of several basalt caps located within the UNESCO World Heritage Greater Blue Mountains Area. Description Mount Hay has a dome-like shape at the summit and it can be found on the southern escarpment of the Grose Valley, one of the main valleys of the Blue Mountains. There is a walking track that goes to the top of the mountain, but the initial approach is via the Mount Hay Road, which branches off from the Great Western Highway at the town of Leura. Greater Blue Mountains Area
The Greater Blue Mountains Area is a World Heritage Site located in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. The area was placed on the World Heritage List at the 24th Session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Cairns in 2000. Etymology When the atmospheric temperature of the region rises, the essential oil from the eucalyptus species evaporates and disperses in the air, causing visible spectra of sunlight to scatter. The scattering causes the shorter wavelength colours (blue) to propagate more than the longer wavelength colours (red). This causes reflections from the mountains to appear bluish to human eyes, giving the mountain region its signature name, "Blue Mountains". The Blue Gum Forest is a forest located in Blue Mountains National Park within the Grose Valley of the Blue Mountains (New South Wales), Blue Mountains in New South Wales west of Sydney, southeastern Australia. Grose Valley
The Grose Valley is a rugged valley in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. It has been formed by the Grose River, the headwaters of which are in the Mount Victoria area. The valley is located between the Great Western Highway and Bells Line of Road, the two major routes across the Blue Mountains. The majority of the valley falls within the Blue Mountains National Park. Blue Mountains Basalts
Blue Mountains Basalts are igneous rocks occurring in the Sydney Basin in eastern Australia. This formation is up to 140 metres thick. Formed in the middle Miocene, some 17 million to 14 million years ago. The remnants of this volcanic lava flow are confined to the higher altitudes in the western Blue Mountains. Such as Mount Hay, Mount Wilson, Mount Irvine, Mount Banks and Mount Tomah. The olivine basalt caps create red/brown soils, known as red podzolics or ''krasnozems''. They have been exposed to a considerable degree of chemical weathering, with a higher iron-oxide concentration than with podzols, hence the reddish colour. Vegetation on these basalt based soils are associated with rainforest, moist eucalyptus forest and the tourist attraction gardens at Mount Wilson and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden.
