Mount Ekblaw
Mount Ekblaw () is a mountain, high, standing east of Mount Van Valkenburg in the eastern part of the Clark Mountains in Marie Byrd Land. It was discovered on aerial flights from the West Base of the United States Antarctic Service in 1940 and named for W. E. Ekblaw, professor of geography at Clark University and a member of the Crocker Land Expedition The Crocker Land Expedition took place in 1913. Marie Byrd Land
Marie Byrd Land (MBL) is an unclaimed region of Antarctica. With an area of , it is the largest unclaimed territory on Earth. It was named after the wife of American naval officer Richard E. Byrd, who explored the region in the early 20th century. The territory lies in West Antarctica, east of the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea and south of the Pacific Ocean portion of the Southern Ocean, extending eastward approximately to a line between the head of the Ross Ice Shelf and Eights Coast. It stretches between 158°W and 103°24'W. The inclusion of the area between the Rockefeller Plateau and Eights Coast is based upon Byrd's exploration. Walter Elmer Ekblaw
Walter Elmer Ekblaw (March 10, 1882 – June 7, 1949) was an American college professor who served as geologist, ornithologist and botanist on the Crocker Land Expedition (1913-1917). Life and career Walter Elmer Ekblaw was born in Champaign County, Illinois. He was one of six children born to Andrew Ekblaw (1854-1923) and Ingrid (Johnson) Ekblaw (1860-1942) both of whom were Swedish immigrants. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in 1910. At the university, he was editor of the Daily Illini (1910). Together with fellow senior, Clarence Foss Williams (1886-1971), he also organized the first University of Illinois homecoming on October 15, 1910. He taught at the University of Illinois from 1910 to 1913. He subsequently became a research associate with the American Museum of Natural History. Clark University
Clark University is a private research university in Worcester, Massachusetts. Crocker Land Expedition
The Crocker Land Expedition took place in 1913. Its purpose was to investigate the existence of Crocker Land, a huge island supposedly sighted by the explorer Robert Peary from the top of Cape Colgate in 1906. It is now believed that Peary fraudulently invented the island. Background Following his 1906 expedition that failed to reach the North Pole, Robert E. Peary reported in his book that he had sighted distant land from the heights of the northwestern shore of Ellesmere Island. He named it Crocker Land, after San Francisco banker George Crocker, one of his financial backers. It is now known that Peary's claim was fraudulent, as he wrote in his diary at the time that no land was visible. The invention of Crocker Land was apparently an attempt to secure further support from Crocker for Peary's 1909 expedition.
