Mount Cooroora
Mount Cooroora is located west of the town of Pomona in the Noosa hinterland, Queensland, Australia. The peak is a 439 metres high intrusive volcanic plug and is the highest point and main feature of the Tuchekoi National Park. The former Electoral district of Cooroora was named after the mountain. Festival Mount Cooroora plays host to the King of the Mountain festival. . Retrieved 29 July 2013. Pomona is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Noosa, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Pomona had a population of 2,910 people. Pomona is located around 135 kilometres north of Brisbane. It is located at the base of Mount Cooroora (439 meters) at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast. Geography The locality of Pomona is bounded to the south by the Bruce Highway and along most of its northern boundary by Six Mile Creek. The North Coast railway line passes through the locality from the south-east to the north-west, with the town served by the Pomona railway station (). Volcanic Plug
A volcanic plug, also called a volcanic neck or lava neck, is a volcanic object created when magma hardens within a vent on an active volcano. When present, a plug can cause an extreme build-up of high gas pressure if rising volatile-charged magma is trapped beneath it, and this can sometimes lead to an explosive eruption. In a plinian eruption the plug is destroyed and ash is ejected. Glacial erosion can lead to exposure of the plug on one side, while a long slope of material remains on the opposite side. Such landforms are called crag and tail. If a plug is preserved, erosion may remove the surrounding rock while the erosion-resistant plug remains, producing a distinctive upstanding landform. Tuchekoi National Park
Tuchekoi National Park is a national park in Queensland, Australia. It is situated to the west and south-west of Pomona, Queensland, Pomona in the Shire of Noosa, Noosa hinterland. Geography The Park is approximately 390 hectares of bushland surrounding Mount Cooroora, a 439 metres high intrusive volcanic plug. Walking tracks A main walking track leads from the Mount Cooroora Forest Reserve (carpark and picnic area) to the top of Mount Cooroora with several meandering tracks around the east and north sides of the mountain. Electoral District Of Cooroora
Cooroora was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1912 to 1992. It was based mainly on the area of the district of Wide Bay and named after Mount Cooroora, near the town of Pomona. Cooroora was mainly a safe Country/National seat, but was one of the many seats that Labor won in the 1989 election landslide. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, and its territory distributed between the new districts of Noosa and Maroochydore. King Of The Mountain (race)
The King of the Mountain is an annual mountain climb race held in Pomona, in the Australian state of Queensland and organised by the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club. Since its first formal race in 1959 following a bet in the Railway Hotel in 1958, the race has become a local holiday involving the district schools and a carnival like atmosphere. Course The original course was from the Railway Hotel (now demolished) to the top of Mount Cooroora and back. The 1979–2021 course went from the ANZ Bank to the top and back. The 2022–Present course is 1km longer but still starts from the old ANZ Bank building. History In 1958, Bruce Samuels, a local footballer and railway porter in the town ran to the top of Mount Cooroora as a hangover cure. After being called out, a timed run was held on 22 March 1958 with Samuels completing the run in 40 minutes. In 1959, Brisbane local Barry Webb took up the challenge and completed it in 35:00.
